They have arrested her on perverting the course of justice - which i think means lying to the police under oath doesnt it?

Is it at all possible that they knew where she was all the time?

Perhaps cahnnel 4 should now re-show the documentary on shannons family and see how it is received knowing what we know.

hmm ..not in those circumstances for so long etc

jingleyjen · 08/04/2008 22:04

if she has said she didn't know where her child was, and if she knew all along then it is a terrible thing she has done.

wannaBe · 08/04/2008 22:07

it could be neglect of shannon leading up to her disappearance though. remember it was reported that Shannon wanted to run away and live with her dad, she may have given police info that suggests she has not always been well looked after?

SlartyBartFast · 08/04/2008 22:07

perhaps it was prior to shannon going missing, when social services were going to go in anyway,
perhaps that is what the neglect relates to?

It's wasting police time and perverting the course of justice. I don't think it would be neglect.

MissPaulaYates · 08/04/2008 22:11

she hAS been charged with neglect

I wonder though if neglect could relate to the suggestion that the Mccanns were approached for a donation? After all if you have your child "kidnapped" and held for a period without going out etc in the name of cash, then you haven't had your child's welfare in mind so that might be classed as neglect?

Quattrocento · 08/04/2008 22:22

I really do think there is something vaguely horrible about the coverage afforded to Mrs Matthews.

Contrast the coverage for her with that of the scrubbed and svelte and oh-so-middle class Mrs McCann who (let's not forget) left three children under three while she went out for dinner.

It's just hypocrisy and double standards. Because Mrs Matthews is a bit less (what was the word that fatuous judge used in the Archer case?) fragrant than Mrs McCann, see what happens.

It's not just the meedja though is it? If the Matthews had been nice and washed and middle class, would social services have had such a hefty involvement? Would they really?

how very sad when discussing the McCann case that there is no empathy or compassion for parents without a child or twins without a sister, just some vitriolic diatribe about class.

nasty

Hulababy · 08/04/2008 22:28

I can't see how the McCann issue is relevent any more TBH. The two cases are so far apart and different, especially now.

People seem hell bent on keeping the class issue going. But this story is no longer about class. It is about a family where the mother has, alledgedly, allowed a police search to hppen looking for her daughter despite knowing where she was. Obviosuly, this is if the information we are beng fed is currently correct. If so, then there can be no comparison at all surely?

And the McCanns did get investigated by SS IIRR, but SS decided the remaining children, the twins, were safe. This is not the case with the mother here.

MissPaulaYates · 08/04/2008 22:29

quattro - i am horrified at the womans actions but do agree with you

on coverage tonight the still of karen looking at the camera whilst being led away by police was doctored

i said to dp - 'just look how they have increased the contrast and colour on her hair - to such a degree her hair was flame red - at the same time this process accentuated the dark shadows under her eyes making her look rough and haggard

nasty

Heated · 08/04/2008 22:29

Hold on, the Matthews have presented us with what is every parent's worst nightmare scenario - child abduction - and essentially 'pimped' their own child, with no thought to her emotional well being, so they could fleece ppl who felt anguished at their plight?

I don't think they should be compared to the McCanns and their still missing daughter.

MissPaulaYates · 08/04/2008 22:30

the mcgann case is relevent though

they asked for money from her fund to help find shannon

I should have put 'allegedly' in there somewhere.

tazmosis · 08/04/2008 22:30

Poor kid - how will she cope long term.

Why do these things always end up being discussed as a class thing though?

This has nothing to do with class - it has to do with an individuals morals, principles and integrity - to name a few things.

NorthernLurker · 08/04/2008 22:31

Quattro - I don't think class has any part to play in the involvment of SS in this case. If your husband is arrested for possessing pornographic images of children, and you yourself are arrested amidst suspicions that you had knowledge of your 9 year old daughters mysterious disappearence and dramatic reappearence - well I think you can expect to be having a chat with a social worker!

scottishmummy · 08/04/2008 22:31

quattro played the class card
