OK this is a rambling idea but just a thought .. do you think we could do it?

What I've been thinking is that we're all connected by being parents .. most of us will have links with schools or nurseries

How about organising a country-wide table top sale in schools / community centres

(its so close to christmas there must be loads and loads of stuff we don't want or need)

So my DS is back at pre-school on Weds

I was thinking maybe the 2nd or 3rd Saturday ..

we'd need

advertising .. local posters / leaflets
the space
the local community to bring along stuff to sell ... and to BUY stuff

it'd be an opportunity to get local business in

we'd need to club together to get the kids involved

would it work

could we work it out here and maybe just go out and do it????

or am I clutching at straws

jnbsmum, carry on carrying away, it's the only way to get things started!! x

I have got something I want to raffle but apparently you need to get a licence from your local council - something to do with a betting/gaming act. So that makes it a bit more complicated.

Bake/Cake sale a brilliant idea I think. Also good cos kids can get involved. And people can always make extra donations.

Just feels more meaningful than giving credit card number on internet, like someone else said.

Twiglett Asda a very big on the charity coffe mornings. I certainly wouldnt mind getting in touch with them asking if they would donate tea cofee etc for this cause

Twiglett · 31/12/2004 14:19

Rubbish Belledejour .. you can hold a raffle .. you can't hold a lottery .. but you can do raffles .. they are a mainstay of most school fairs

Do you think someone from the mumsnet team could help us gather people from each area to hold cofee mornings. I wouldnt know who to contact to ask

belledejour · 31/12/2004 14:23

This is info on raffle from NSPCC website:

f you hold a raffle that is open to members of the public, the raffle must be registered with the local authority. A named promoter should be nominated to take responsibility for the raffle.

Fimbo · 31/12/2004 14:26

Belledejour-our school raffles are always registered and tickets given out with a named promotor on them.

Twiglett · 31/12/2004 14:28

I stand corrected

Our school's raffles are just done with tickets

I do stand by the fact that most schools do them without registration though

Our school raffles are also licenced, but the nursery ones, only open to parents at the nursery are not. The nursery manager advised me that we couldn't sell tickets to friends or work collegues without a licence.

You coul draise money towards an aquabox. The aquabox scheme is an official project of Rotary International in Great Britain and Ireland. All boxes dispatched overseas are monitored by aid agencies. (Registered charity no. 1015854).

The most urgent single problem facing the relief agencies is the provision of safe drinking water.

AQUABOX WORKS IN TWO WAYS:
. It is filled with a selection of warm clothing and useful hardware items

. It also contains a filter cartridge and a matching supply of water-treatment tablets. Once the welfare items have been removed, each aquabox contains tablets that can be used to purify up to 1000 litres of polluted water, making it safe and pleasant to drink. As an example, 1000 litres is 5000 cups ? enough, say, for a group of four people drinking 10 cups per day for about four months.

. The boxes also have a serial number that can tracked by the agencies as to the whereabouts of the box.

I think if you do a raffle at an event, on the day, just with those cloakroom tickets, it doesn't have to be registered.

If you do one organised in advance where books of tickets are sent out and you write an address/phone no. on, those have to be licensed.

HTH!
