Mumsnet in the Times

Here's a nice article about Mumsnet - make way for the newbies.

And blimey don't Justine and Carrie have a lot of children?

LOL at being a tribal elder, Soapy. I presume my presence on that list owes more to my age than my sagacity or wisdom though!

nice post soapbox - please add your own name to your list

lol mb

morningpaper · 15/03/2008 12:27

Maidamess I am just the same actually

it's rare I 'notice' anyone in that way

And when people say "X is that you? I recognise your posting style!" I honestly am IN AWE

mind you I have no people skills generally

Oh, and it made me cry. I'm all hormonal and praying it is because I'm pregnant but due to my mumsnet addiction it is probably PMT.

so glad its not just me then.

the only postig style i recognise is Cods. I'd have no hope if she ever started typing properly.

i never get name changers, nor do i seem to reatin any information about anyone unless they really stand out or i have had many discussions with them

Ledodgy · 15/03/2008 12:31

Weren't the murders that reminded Cod about Alan Partridge in Ipswich which reminded her of Norwich and were nothing to do with Norfolk?

Boco · 15/03/2008 12:31

Maybe it was a typo and she meant hardcore finimist.

VanillaPumpkin · 15/03/2008 12:32

I love it! I am so proud of us all .
I am going to post the link to my Mum.

dragonbutter · 15/03/2008 12:32

I think it's a bit odd to have these synopses of mnetters. Would that happen in real life? Maybe it does.
I think it's more helpful to 'virtually' bump into these elders and learn for myself where they stand on the big issues.
It also seems to pigeonhole them a bit, not really allowing for them to change their minds or mellow etc

S1ur · 15/03/2008 12:32

I personally find name and shame celebrate mners a bit pointless really.

My list would be quite different and change frequently and for that reason I wouldn't post it.

There are regs, there are reliable posters who are authorative in specific areas, there are witty folk and folk who are scarily intelligent and well read and all sorts of in-between folk who are sometimes witty, sometimes gently supportive and sometimes just there in the middle of the night or day to hear you scream.

I love them all (apart from those I want to beat around the head with the mn guide to how to be a fab mner)

Sorry my post to soapy, not CM. See my earlier comments for article review

Aitch · 15/03/2008 12:34

i was asked about certain posters (more than went into the final list, but like i keep saying... that's what happens in newspapers, things get cut) and if there was anyone else i would mention. do you HONESTLY think tiktok/blu/marina/soapbox etc weren't mentioned? that would be madness.

CM wrote the bits, with quotes from various and her own opinion, who knows how many she did and why the subs kept who they kept? sub-editors are a law unto themselves... they just do what they like.

Ledodgy · 15/03/2008 12:35

I agree with Twiglett also. Highlighting certain posters does seem to go against the ethos especially when so many other major contributors to mn are left out. I'm thinking specifically of Blu with her always sound advice, Marina and Soapbox for the Christmas appeal and probably more.

S1ur · 15/03/2008 12:35
Ledodgy · 15/03/2008 12:36

LOl Cod.

soapbox · 15/03/2008 12:36

Slur - the village elders don't change - at least not until they pop their clogs and take their place in heaven

Mamazon · 15/03/2008 12:36

Well its clear to me that CM is an MNer.

i think some of you clever detective's should track her downa nd make her re write the article including me this time

S1ur · 15/03/2008 12:37

I think its fine really though. Its only a couple of fairly prolific posters to give a sense of mn.

Would have been more interesting to come up with four or five archwtypes and then include a questionnaire where we could work out which hole we could be pigeonned into.

It shouldn't be taken as a vertible mn whos who.

S1ur · 15/03/2008 12:38

And yet you missed quite a few of your list soapy?

You'll probably have to make some sort of sacrifice to mn gods.

morningpaper · 15/03/2008 12:38

lol Cod I remember when you went to Tesco!!!

it WAS funny

people think you LIVE here

Yes I was given a list and asked to suggest others and sumamrise and I said "I'm sorry, I can't remember a damn thing about anyone, I think Aitch likes the telly?" and that was my helpful contribution towards things

OP posts:
Overrun · 15/03/2008 12:39

Wow, celebritys indeed! No issue with the "stars" that are mentioned, but there could have been a lot of other esteemed names on that list

No19 · 15/03/2008 12:39

I think what Aitch has written is right - she could have edited or written ten or twenty miniprofiles and the subeditors cut at will and retain whatever will fit in the available space. Editing can change the tone of something to the point of unrecognition (word?) but the journalist gets blamed.

If posters themselves are being self-publicists that's a bit unpleasant but if a journo is guided by someone else or just edits what she receives then that's lazy hackery, not people jostling for position.
