modern day 7 deadly sins

dizzydixies · 10/03/2008 22:27

apparently there is now a new list of 7 deadly sins

taking drugs
no experimenting on humans
obscene wealth
polluting environment
social injustice
poverty
genetically modification

weird eh, doesn't sound very well thought through / defined by whatever journalist invented it - not very catchy either!

For instance:

Drugs - what about coffee and chocolate, what about medical use?

Experimenting on humans - where would athletic and astronaut training fit within this?

Obscene wealth - Bill Gates has this, I suppose, but he tries very hard to give it away, so does obscene = lots of or does it = from nasty sources e.g. "Dirty Desmond"

Surely not poverty as in being poor? Or is it as in creating poverty where it should not be e.g. Mugabe

Don't really get what this is all on about

edam · 10/03/2008 22:42

I think this is inspired by the Vatican, isn't it? Who have a bleeding cheek talking about obscene wealth and social injustice. Why not use some of their OWN millions to help defeat poverty and stop giving women such a hard time?

dizzydixies · 10/03/2008 22:42

its been done by the catholic church although they've not made it official

surely obscene wealth = greed
polluting the environment = sloth
poverty = greed again?
experimenting on humans - vanity in some aspects?!?

just say it on the news and thought it was all a bit strange, have no opinion on the reigious aspect of it just the impications of the need to update them

dizzydixies · 10/03/2008 22:43

edam thats exactly what dh said, apparently they have untold wealth

theBOD · 11/03/2008 12:51

why would taking drugs be one of the 7 deadly sins? just another case of confusing morality with the law. as i am sure they are referring to evil non-taxed drugs but not those lovely "few pints of beer with the boys and a glass of wine with dinner" taxed and socially accepted drugs.

ElfOnTheTopShelf · 11/03/2008 13:13

Surely obscene wealth and poverty go hand in hand?

It is IMO disgusting the amount of profit that gas and electric companies make per year when there are pensions and poor families sitting with no heating on because they cannot afford it.

And yes, the Vatican should be spreading their wealth to the world, to the poorest areas where life expectancy is shocking.

dizzydixies · 11/03/2008 13:48

Elf maybe we should send them a MN 'petition'

nervousal · 11/03/2008 13:51

I thought it was "stem cell research" rather than experimenting on humans? Thats what it said on news last night?

dizzydixies · 11/03/2008 13:52

nervousal, I just copied word for word off the news bulletin we were watching, even made dh pause the sky plus as couldn't tpe fast enough

OP posts:
Flamesparrow · 11/03/2008 13:53

To my mind the 7 sins are still all relevant today

teakettle · 11/03/2008 13:54

imo all of the new ones are covered by the original. I think the vatican would have been better off drawing attention to the original ones which are essentially primordial, esp pride.

nervousal · 11/03/2008 13:54

hmm according to BBC new site they are
Environmental pollution
Genetic manipulation
Accumulating excessive wealth
Inflicting poverty
Drug trafficking and consumption
Morally debatable experiments
Violation of fundamental rights of human nature

Psychomum5 · 11/03/2008 13:57

I didn;t think that the vatican could change the deadly sins, seeing as they get so angry on the mis-quoting of the bible etc!!!!

and surely them doing this would count as some kind of vanity, at thinking they are better than the bible to be able to change the sins

dizzydixies · 11/03/2008 14:02

they haven't officially confirmed it or changed anything and the original list remains, so goodness knows where this has come from initially but these are what they would be if there was a more modern day list apparently

Um, I am a (struggling) Roman Catholic. There's plenty wrong with the church but I think it's too simplistic to say that the Vatican should give away its millions. Most jobbing priests in the UK and Western Europe(and their parishes) are really struggling financially.

Also, thought this point from the BBC website was interesting:

"I think the major point is that priests who are hearing confessions are not sufficiently attuned to some of the real evils in our world," he told the BBC News website. "They need to be more aware today of the social face of sin - the inequalities at the social level. They think of sin too much on an individual level.

"I think priests who hear confession should have a deeper sense of the violence and injustice of such problems - and the fact that people collaborate simply by doing nothing. One of the original deadly sins is sloth - disengagement and not getting involved," Father O'Collins said. The Jesuit professor now teaches at St Mary's University in Twickenham.

"It was interesting that these remarks came from the head of the Apostolic Penitentiary," he said. "I can't remember a time when it was so concerned about issues such as environmental pollution and social injustice. It's a new way of thinking."

Surely a shift in emphasis away from individual sin to a collective engagement with issues such as pollution and social justice can only be a good thing?

dizzydixies · 11/03/2008 14:24

sorry counting I wasn't meaning this to turn into a religious debate or dig at the vatican - I never knew that they had all these supposed treasures and riches, dh just pointed it out to me last night - am very ignorant on these things

I just thought the new 7 'sins' were quite an interesting talking point, it seems I didn't even get them correct - mush have been watching mickey mouse news

Crikey, no offence taken and no apologies necessary at ALL Dixie - I'm usually the one doing the RC church bashing on this site!!

(Loathe the patriarchal aspects of the Church for example and the emphasis on individual sexuality especially its attitude to homosexuality.)

Just so happens - in among all the bad bits -that the Papal encyclical on social justice is a truly inspirational document!

Anyway, 'tis always a good one to debate ...

dizzydixies · 11/03/2008 14:35

thanks. have size 8s and never sure if they overstep sometimes!!

also i don't think the church selling off precious artifacts etc would really do anything to help the poor.there is already millions upon millions donated every year which due to corruption etc does not reach those truely in need.the catholic church already donates and provides help to charities in a huge way. selling off the artifacts would d nothing more than reduce te churches power long term thus putting them in a weaker position to help those in need and put the artifacts in the hands of private dealers thus depriving the public of them.

Countingthegreyhairs · 11/03/2008 14:51

Nah, it's an interesting topic for a thread ...

.. I think the definition of the seven deadly sins has been fairly fluid over time (weren't there originally eight?)

B1977 · 11/03/2008 14:57

RubyRioja - hope you're not giving those equal value!
