I bet he wasn't expecting this when he handed in his English project!

Makes you wonder what the project was supposed to be about!

saintlysecur · 17/12/2004 13:24

Sounds like they were more worried about getting in trouble themselves than anything to do with his project-I am quite sure it is perfectly possible to write an interesting project about topless artists!

feastofstevenmom · 17/12/2004 13:25

and bet he wouldn't have been suspended if he had included a picture of the Botticelli Venus in his project

Joolstide · 17/12/2004 13:29

makes you wonder though - did he do it 'for a laugh' or to cause just such a commotion?

feastofstevenmom · 17/12/2004 13:32

who knows JT. could be a well thought out thorough project - who knows without reading it?

Joolstide · 17/12/2004 13:35

you're absolutely right fos - I just thought '14 year old boy? - Jordan?' - probably jumped to a wrong conclusion - maybe not

however I think the punishment was uncalled for - this story is more amusing than shocking - a little word in his ear would have sufficed!

total over reaction- unless he was told NOT to use topless pics. Partly his teacher's fault- I'd never give students such a free rein- i'd always want an outline of the project etc. BUT if he's used the school computers to download the pics then it's a totally different kettle of fish as he's broken a major school rule. If he's done it at home then he hasn't broken the strict pc rules.

Without knowing the full story it is hard to comment though. This may well have been another act of defiance on his part

Hulababy · 17/12/2004 16:06

Not read all of story here or know full facts BUT as an ICt teacher at a secondary school I would imagine that this pupil DID know the rules on what is appropraite and not, and what he CAN and CANNOT do using school computers. Most children when starting secondary fill in, often a spart of school home contract, a consent form to be allowed access to the school's internet/e-mail access. Part of this policy is that the pupil should only download or search for appropriate material - and it is generally layed out what is not appropraite, including pornography, offensive materials, etc.

If this was the case (as it is in the schools I know about) then this boy would have known that the images he included were not appropriate for his school work and therefore he did deserve a punishment.

Is this the right punishement? I don't know. If it is a one off offence and he has no other blots on his record, then yes I think it is over the top. In such a circumstance I would have had his e-mail/internet permissions from the school network stopped for a given period oftime, and for his access to school network to be limited/supervised during a set time too.

If, however, it was just another in a string of offenses, then it would have been justified as a punishment.

happymerryberries · 17/12/2004 16:12

I bet next months salery he did it to take the piss. Ask yourself how much you would like to make work if it was topless women? How much further do you think he should be allowed to go? Beaver shots? I thought that most work places have stopped topless pictures on the walls out or respect to the women working there. Why the fuck should teachers have to put up with this shit?

He did it to be offensive, end of story.

ZCMUM · 17/12/2004 16:13

Did his parents think it a suitable project? I think I would have told him to choose someone a bit more appropriate to do a project on!

happymerryberries · 17/12/2004 16:14

Sory, mark work if it contained pictures of topless women. Also ask yourself how long it would take boys to start using the pictures to shock or harass the girls in the class. Students are given very clear guidance in our school about what is appropriate. I bet he had been too.

ZCMUM · 17/12/2004 16:15

Anyway, how the times have changed, when I was at school, English was all Macbeth and Lord of the flies, not 'our favourite celebrities'!!!

happymerryberries · 17/12/2004 16:16

Quite! And that is a whole different thread!

Hulababy · 17/12/2004 16:16

I can't understand why this child's parents did not think it odd that he would eb allowed to put such stuff in his work. The more I think about it, the more I realise how much this lad had to know what he was doing was wrong.

Can you imagine the thread on MN if one of our children came home and we heard they were doing a rpoject on a topless model, which included the child downloading topless pictures and including them in his school work???? I can imagine the uproar there'd be about such an irresponsible school and/or teacher and how bad it would be for a teacher to allow/encourage this. And how lax the school was with its internet access.

More I think about it, more I think that this lad did need a strong punishment.

TheHollyAndTheTwiglett · 17/12/2004 16:17

Well I personally think he probably did it on purpose .. at that age he's old enough to understand where the line is drawn and the punishment of a day's suspension sounds completely right to me

Are you telling me it is acceptable to submit soft porn (topless shots) in an English homework piece about celebrities???

It was done to shock and see if he could get away with it I bet .. but he didn't .. good for the school

Janos · 17/12/2004 18:01

Happymerryberries, totally agree with you.

Bet you anything the teacher who would have been marking the project was female and it was done in order to embarrass/humilate her.

My mum used to be an English teacher and has had this sort of thing done to her. Think the school took the right action and can't believe the father's response.

Janos · 17/12/2004 18:02

Actually, I can believe it only too well, sadly.

feastofstevenmom · 17/12/2004 18:02

have to admit that having thought about it more deeply I do agree with HMB that it is unacceptable to put topless piccies in a school project, after being so flippant this morning

Janos · 17/12/2004 18:06

A days suspension is not that severe, is it? Mind you I've known of worse things happening and the pupil not getting any punishment. Teachers have to put up with so much crap nowadays.

DoesntChristmasDragOn · 17/12/2004 18:08

I don't think that the problem was Jordan being the topic of his project, it was the nature of the photos he included. I think the punishment was perfectly acceptable.

happymerryberries · 17/12/2004 18:22

Agree that the probelm wasn't the theme, although one could argue it showed poor taste . I would also think that a review of Jordan would limit the depth of his work. But it is totaly out of order to have topless shots in the work.

Is it any wonder that the boy did this given the jackass he seems to have for a father? Have people no standards of what is appropriate behaviour? And as I asked whatever next? I am glad that the school stepped in, good for them.

CaRowlers · 17/12/2004 18:35

Wish we could suspend parents too - this lad's dad deserves a similar punishment for being a twat.

jollymum · 17/12/2004 18:58

but she wasn't topless, was she or have I got it wrong/[embarrassed]

DoesntChristmasDragOn · 17/12/2004 18:59

The pupil included topless photos of her in his project, yes. Although she isn't in the photo on the news item
