600 people viewed a video of mother being raped on YouTube - none of them complained

A video of a young mother being raped while her children cry in the background has sparked calls for the site to be moderated.

A petition to ask the government to use its resources to find a solution to the problem of videos making light of sexual violence against women has been set up here:
petitions.pm.gov.uk/YouTubevetting

I would be interested to hear the views of mumsnetters regarding the policing (or not) of sites like YouTube - whether there should be some sort of vetting procedure and what, if anything, can be done, when horrific videos such as the one described above are posted.

Thanks .

Pruners, there is no link the clip itself on this thread.

Blu · 05/03/2008 21:25

Totally sickening, up, down and sideways.

But what sort of bizarre relationship do people have with the internet and a desparate need to be 'famous' or 'up there' that they don't realise that it will lead to their immediate arrest (give or take 600 hits)? Do they think it is their personal arena? Really weird...and disturbing.

rantinghousewife · 05/03/2008 21:25

X posted, Mercy, thank you.

louii · 05/03/2008 21:25

The link on heer isnt to the video, just a newspaper article about it.

Horrific story.

Carmenere · 05/03/2008 21:25

The link is to the Times not the actual you Tube! FFS do you think that anyone on mn would link to that

expatinscotland · 05/03/2008 21:26

i sometimes think the world was a better place before the net came into being, and especially before camera phones.

I won't be clicking on the link as I feel sick just thinking of that poor woman.

As for the people who watched and didn't report - bunch of tossers!

PaulaYatesBiggestFan · 05/03/2008 21:27

putrid

Chuffinnora · 05/03/2008 21:29

Good God.
The objectification of women in the media, porn on the internet and increasing violence in society is brewing up to be a terrible mix.

It is horrifying that this woman was set up by girls and then raped by young boys.

Carmenere · 05/03/2008 21:30

I feel very sad for the woman but also sad for the young men and particularly the girls who facilitated it. How horrible to revel in such a base, destructive, harmful action. how sad to be brought up with a lack of empathy, to be unable to identify with another human beings pain and humiliation.

expatinscotland · 05/03/2008 21:32

Well, I don't feel sad for the girls and the boys who set up this sort of sickness.

You get to a certain age, and you know right from wrong, no matter how badly you've been brought up, and so when you chose to do bad you're responsible for it.

The lack of a sense of personal responsibility in today's society is a factor in why things like this occur.

I'm overprotective of my DD1, who is SN and delayed, because of animals like this.

And getting very fed up with them, too.

Rhubarb · 05/03/2008 21:36

This is awful! Not content with raping a woman whilst her children cry in the background, they have to video it and then want to share their video with the nation! They obviously thought others would enjoy watching it and they were right - 600 people before anyone thought to complain!

What kind of a society is this? What has the internet done to us at all?

Carmenere · 05/03/2008 21:39

Oh no I am not exonerating them for any blame, the little shits knew what they were doing. I just feel sorry for the fact that the very essence of their being has been corrupted to such an extent that they chose to do this.

wannaBe · 05/03/2008 21:44

was talking to dh about this just now. And what I didn't realize was that anyone can upload to youTube from anywhere. So you could upload your video from.. say... the local syber cafe, or through someone's non secure wireless network and you wouldn't be traceable.

Callisto · 06/03/2008 09:22

The 600 people who watched the video will have specifically been looking for this sort of thing. I have been onto YouTube loads of times to watch stuff and have never come across anything even slighty pornographic (naively didn't cross my mind that anything like that would even be on there). This is not YouTube's problem, it is a problem with our society.

Upwind · 06/03/2008 09:33

Can any random person put up any video they like on YouTube? For some reason I had assumed you would have to have had your account for a while and an inoffensive track record before being allowed to do that.

lillypie · 06/03/2008 10:02

It's heartbreaking

What is happening to our children?

Rhubarb · 06/03/2008 10:08

Yes, anyone can put anything on YouTube, it does not have to be verified at all. It is different to MySpace, I wanted to upload some band material on there recently and had to provide a copy of my passport to prove that I was who I said I was, so that they didn't get done for ripping off other peoples music.

If there were more legal restrictions, then this is what they would have to do with videos too.

Seems stupid that I had to provide personal details to upload some music, yet to upload a video I need no such checks, no such permission.

The law needs to be tighter.

totalmisfit · 06/03/2008 10:29

things like this really make me want to believe in fire and brimstone... i just want to believe that somewhere at some point the awful, inhuman perpetrators of such a heinous crime will pay for the pain and misery they have inflicted on these innocent people. [anger]

monkeytrousers · 09/03/2008 19:48

It's terrible. I hope the purps are prosecyted.

But also 600 isn't a lot of traffic for You Tube. They caught it early by those standards.
