8 passengers YouTube channel

Just read this on the BBC https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-66651506

A mum from a family YouTube channel, seeming known for Uber strict parenting, has been arrested for child abuse after the 12 year old escaped and went begging to a neighbour for food and water with deep lacerations from being tied up.

The older daughter posted that she had been raising the abuse with the authorities for a while.

Did anyone see any of her videos before they were taken down and what were they like.

How can anyone trust another human being like this but also the cognitive dissonance to make parenting videos is just beyond me. Unless she truly believes that her behaviour is acceptable?

Ruby Franke: '8 Passengers' parenting mum arrested on child abuse suspicion

The Utah vlogger's malnourished son escaped to her neighbour's home to seek help, police say.

I've only watched one or two but they were pretty much hiding in plain sight. Very odd very strict parenting. I think the son lost his room and slept on the floor for months or something as punishment

But obviously no evidence of violence. But people have been calling child abuse on her for a long time

OhBeAFineGuyKissMe · 02/09/2023 08:14

That is what I don’t understand, if lots of people, including her own daughter, have been calling this out - why wasn’t this investigated earlier?

It wasn’t investigated because the police are too busy shooting innocent pregnant black women

OhBeAFineGuyKissMe · 02/09/2023 09:42

That is a tragic and horrid story, and highlights the issues the police have in America with guns, but has absolutely nothing to do with this case and why child abuse was allowed to continue, despite other family members informing authorities.

I wouldn't say it has nothing to do with it. Being a pretty, wealthy white woman seemingly elevates you above all suspicion.

buzzlightyearsgloves · 03/09/2023 18:49

I've seen this all over TikTok. Some of the videos are really odd but yet she had 2 million followers. The boy escaped from her business partners house and they later found his two sisters I think. Such an odd case!

salsmum · 15/09/2023 11:38

The reason why she has so many followers is because the court case is today... She threatened to cut her 4 year olds teddy's head off.. she made her eldest son sleep on a bean bag for seven months and sent him to a wilderness camp because he wasn't humble! Told her then 8 year old that he doesn't need food when he said he was hungry and when teachers rang her to say her 5 year old had no lunch packed she refused to take lunch into school as 'punishment' for forgetting to pack her own lunch!
The 12 year old who escaped was malnourished, cut and bruised and has duct tape around his ankles and wrists! This woman Ruby Franke is accused of six counts of child abuse and neglect ( all her kids) The escaped child was kept at her business partners home but the mum knew about the state he was in. The parents made a LOT of money having their kids on SM and they've lived a lavish lifestyle on the back of that. They are Mormons so will probably use their discipline methods as 'teachings'. They were reported by neighbours on a number of occasions about concerns for their kids by CPS did nothing. 🤬

I agree she’s blonde white and pretty in a world where that gives you a smokescreen. Horrible horrible story. Poor children.

BertieBotts · 16/09/2023 07:19

There is probably significant overlap in those who see their children as objects for them to control, and objects to be exploited for money.

TV and film have really strict laws against exploitation of children (and the Duggars still managed...) but youtube doesn't. So I think we will see more of these until the laws catch up. Some US states are now making laws about minors having to be paid if used for content like this.

Something very weird about the way these extreme religious practices are seen as something generally positive in the US as well.

I remember seeing a video where the mum had just got a call from the school saying her child didn't have any lunch with her today. The mum said to the school that if her daughter had forgot her lunch that's her own fault and she 'hopes' other children won't feed her as it won't teach her a lesson. The little girl was 5 years old.
The mum took a bedroom away from her son, sent him to a reform school notorious for abuse. Threatened to cut her little girls doll head off as punishment for something minor. They're not allowed breakfast until ALL the house chores are done.
The little girl was late to school as she didn't get herself up in time. She was 4. The list goes on and none of this is speculation, they are all straight from my vlogs that I've personally seen.
Can't believe she wasn't done for abuse before now.

Yahyahs22 · 16/09/2023 07:29

*her not my. Definitely not my vlogs 😂

itsgettingweird · 16/09/2023 07:51

It's like anything - if no one questions you you don't see an issue. She posted and got lots of viewers. Plenty of people saw what she did and she was "getting away with it" (in her head she probably didn't see anything wrong with what she was doing)

People were watching this abuse as entertainment. They may have questioned her methods but they still watched. They still have her airtime and money from it.

Those poor children AngrySad

OhBeAFineGuyKissMe · 16/09/2023 07:55

I hope there is an investigation as there were plenty of complaints/concerns raised by neighbours, siblings, other family members...

I don't know how American schools work with safeguarding but most of the stories above would have triggered a safeguarding referral from a UK school.

I’ve seen the neighbour quoted saying that he was afraid the children were going to leave that house in body bags. It was common knowledge she was mistreating them.

I wonder about the father too, I know they were separated but was he seeing them to know what was going on?

Dragonwindow · 16/09/2023 09:59

This has also got me thinking about that horrible woman who pops up in the Daily Mail on slow news days, who calls herself Britain's meanest mum or something. She's full of stories like her son forgetting his sleeping bag for a scout camp, so she not only refused to go and get it, but sent him a nasty text message in the middle of the night along the lines of "lovely and snug in my warm bed" or something hideous.

If you're rich and white you can get away with literally anything in plain sight. And even get paid for selling stories/vlogs about how you're doing it.

Eta I just googled - her name is Louise parker, and apparently she has also been reported to social services by neighbours in the past.
