Peace activist walk to India with no money thwarted by an inabilty to speak French

A Peace Activist's attempt to walk to India with no money, relying on the kindness of strangers was stopped after he had two days without food and shelter in France.

He couldn't speak French, and couldn't explain his motives. They thought he was a freeloading back packer.

I'm sorry, but I did snigger at this a bit.....didn't he think that speaking the language would be helpful!

He is now learning french

hehehe, bit more planning needed there. Hope he realises that after France comes Germany, Eastern Europe, Ukraine etc etc...

SSSandy2 · 29/02/2008 08:52

Surely he could have had a letter translated to carry about with him explaining what he was doing bless him!

slim22 · 29/02/2008 08:53

ROLF
only in France

There is a french couple who recently walked their honeymoon to jerusalem (6 months) only with a pilgrim's baton and swiss knife. Obviously speaking french must be a plus. And Turkish attacks in Kurdistan had not started yet.

moondog · 29/02/2008 09:31

Ha ha ha ha!!
Hysterical.
What a knob.

Actually when we lived in Kurdistan (Eastern Turkey) a couple of years ago, we met a mad German family who were travelling from Germany to Afghanistan in acaravan pulled by a tractor.

We bumped into each other in a volcano crater.

SSSandy2 · 29/02/2008 09:58

I likethe sound of that German family

Tommy · 29/02/2008 09:59

lol - heard this on the news this morning. preparation is always so important isn't it?!

Blandmum · 29/02/2008 11:20

I was left wondering how far French would take him, once he gets through France?

I was also mildly offended at the thought of a westerner 'sponging' off people who may very well be considerably poorer than he is. I would imagine that there are any number of people living in India who already have a strong grasp of the evils of capitalism without some well meaning, but rather deranged westerner, coming to eat their food.

And I do realise that there are many rich Indian people, but somehow I don't think they are going to be supporting him

I like it where he says that the people who thought he was just a freeloading western backpacker were missing the point

suedonim · 29/02/2008 11:28

First story I read this morning and it got me smiling!

jesuswhatnext · 29/02/2008 11:34

i pmsl at the great numpty

he sounds like a really badly organised boy scout

InLoveWithSweenyTodd · 29/02/2008 12:34

so next year he'll get as far as Germany only to have to come back and walk around the lake district instead, learning german as he goes along...
and so on.

IorekByrnison · 29/02/2008 13:32

You're all so harsh! It's true he didn't really think it through, but such idealism! Look here at the nice interview he gave a few weeks ago.

InLoveWithSweenyTodd · 29/02/2008 13:54

sorry...
I couldn't help laughing incontrolably a little bit at him going back to learn french, and thinking that next year he may have to come back and learn German and so on.

Grouchyoscar · 29/02/2008 18:32

Poor deluded well meaning twit chap

I bet he spent 2 days saying (In english) the same thing slightly slower, in a slightly louder, more exaspetated voice. (Or asking where the beach was)

I bet it was a really good idea when he thought it up. Sadly he never read the 'France' chapter of Bill Bryson's 'neither here nor there'

BTW how did he get to France? Did he stow away or walk through the tunnel?
