It has just been announced the police are going to search 2000 homes in Dewsbury. While I am obviously pleased they are working so hard, it did cross my mind that if someone has taken Shannon the police have just given them warning about what is going to happen.

depends what they're searching for. Are they searching for Shannon? or evidence as to what might have happened to her?

NAB3wishesfor2008 · 27/02/2008 12:52

I don't know but I wish she would just come home.

Too many kids going missing.

Too many murders.

That was all there was on the paper yesterday. I think I read about 3 other pages.

It's not looking very hopeful to be honest is it? It kind of hit home hard yesterday when I popped to the shops in the village where I teach and where her Dad lives and saw the posters in the shop windows

Flier · 27/02/2008 12:58

was hoping this was some good news about her

wannaBe · 27/02/2008 12:58

I honestly think that if she'd run away she would have been found by now.

it's tragic, and how many people will stop letting their children walk to/from school now because of it. .

NAB3wishesfor2008 · 27/02/2008 13:00

I know. My son is nearly 7 and keeps asking to walk home on his own and when I said no he said I could drive and he would walk next to the car. It is bad enough letting them run off ahead for the last bit.

Poor girl.

My ds2 is 11 and I am only now just thinking about letting him walk home. With some others from the area. And I will be walking along behind.

WingsofanAngel · 27/02/2008 13:02

It said in the newspaper they were digging up her Uncle's garden

I also think if she had run away that they would have found her by now.

It must be horrible for her family.

wannaBe · 27/02/2008 13:09

what also makes me is the lack of discussion on this matter compared to other missing children. Not that people should be discussing it constantly of course, but why do some generate more discussion than others?

Yes I can see that in the beginning when it appeared she might have run away people might have thought it was different, but the longer it goes on the less likely that has happened and still ...

bossybritches · 27/02/2008 13:10

I hate to say it but it is a common saying in the police that after 3 days they stop looking for a missing person & start looking for a body.

Not always the way & happy to be proved wrong but it is often the case.

Oh no!

OP posts:
wannaBe · 27/02/2008 13:20

sounds like the investigation of the uncle's house was routine

here

but does sound as if they're not considering the possibility that Shannon ran away now .

although how tragic if she actually was planning to run away and something horrible has happened to her.

NAB3wishesfor2008 · 27/02/2008 14:05

Not a single mention on ITV1 news.

OP posts:
scampadoodle · 27/02/2008 14:16

But maybe there's nothing to report? What's the point of doing a news report if nothing new has happened?

NAB3wishesfor2008 · 27/02/2008 14:18

I see your point but it is sad how quick things just fall of the bulletins.

OP posts:
scampadoodle · 27/02/2008 14:20

I know, but I'm sure if they discover something it'll be on there sharpish.

shabster · 27/02/2008 14:30

Hope she is soon found safe and well - but as the hours go by hope seems to fade. Cant imagine what the parents are going through.

We went to Rhodes in June and even though my DS is 10 I was worried because of Madelines dissaperance. We got our DS a special personal alarm from our local police. Went to check in at Manchester airport and had no problem. Went through security and they pulled my DS to one side - tried to seriously question him. When I explained it was because of Maddy the guy took out the batteries from the alarm and gave them to the crew and said we could have them back when we landed in Rhodes.

I feel for our children - it is too mad a world for them to have freedom.

NAB3wishesfor2008 · 27/02/2008 14:40

I am more worried since MM went (I have a 4 year old DD) and when she ran ahead in Tesco and I couldn't see her I dind't half scream her name.

"I feel for our children - it is too mad a world for them to have freedom"

Shabster - I think that's a very inaccurate comment.

The world is no more dangerous than it was. There have always been abductions and murders - always.

Of course in the light of recent events it's tempting to wrap our kids up in cotton wool but really, in the bigger picture, nothing has changed.

PennyBenjamin · 27/02/2008 15:43

Branflake - you are totally right, the world is no more dangerous than it ever was, it's just that because of our all pervasive media we hear about these things much more than we ever used to.

Apparently something like 50 children are murdered every year, and around 45 of those are killed by people they know. That leaves only 5 children who are killed by strangers, out of millions of children in this country.

I know that statistics are of no comfort if it is your child, but from the way things are reported in the media you'd think every child was in constant danger.

PennyBenjamin · 27/02/2008 15:52

Actually, when I think about it, statistically your child is in far more danger from people they know, so we'd all be better keeping them away from family and friends!

shabster · 27/02/2008 16:14

branflake81 - you probably have a point saying that our world is no worse than it ever was - but - I am too afraid to let go of my little lad. We talk about it all the time and I explain to him my fears - he goes to wrestling club and enjoys learning how to look after himself. Think it is probably media that stirs up the fear.

Ive got the added worry cause two of my four sons have died. My baby boy from congenital heart problems but my 7yr old was killed by a reversing lorry right outside our house. I have to fight the urge to wrap DS4 completly in cotton wool. Think Im winning my battle with the fear but when stories like Shannon's come into the media it terrifies me.
