Rescue differences between Titan and Other Boats

Why do you think this happens ? Yet another disaster off the Greece coast and the same amount of resources won't be deployed...
It baffles me... is it because they are millionaires? Is it because what the immigrants do is illegal and resources are not deployed on illegal activities ?
It's very sad.... but got me wondering....

It's because the lost sub is something that's unusual and the people in it were alive for days with the potential to be rescued.

Migrants or refugees dying on boats or other horrific circumstances is not uncommon and people have become desensitised to it.

JamSandle · 22/06/2023 19:49

A lot is actually done to help migrants on the boats but it happens more often and sometimes nothing can be done.

cantcopenow · 22/06/2023 19:53

I don’t know how to say this delicately, but - by the time there was enough information about the most recent disaster off Greece, it was too late to save anyone in the boat. Or at least, that’s what we’re being led to believe.

(Please note that I abhor the current policy and don’t believe it is working. But that’s a whole other very long story.)

I think in this case it’s apples and oranges though.

The thought of being locked in the hold of a sinking boat is just horrifying. Horrifying.

I don't think it's as simple as that they are millionaires/billionaires as I think if you and I were in that sub then they still would have tried everything to rescue us. Think of the Thai boys stuck in the caves, the little boy in Spain stuck down the well. Not wealthy people but huge resources put into their rescue, never giving up hope.

Sadly I think the lack of efforts put into rescue of migrant boats is down to dehumanisation of these people more than a just a case of being rich or poor. Other extreme rescues are unique, attract huge media attention globally and almost become a show to the world of what amazing resources are available. Whereas migrant boats going down are almost a daily occurrence, barely newsworthy in many cases and seen as collateral damage and the fault of the countries they come from. They are fleeing due to deeply corrupt governments who don't give a shit if a few thousand people a year die. It seems like a token effort made to rescue some but most left to their own fate. It's absolutely tragic.

I mean, they paid 250k each for a day trip ticket. I suspect the family can pay many times that for a rescue mission.

I’m not sure they were alive though, now wreckage has been found it’s likely they died when it wrecked.

katepilar · 23/06/2023 15:27

I cant help thinking its a bit of "boys game" which is more interesting to play, its more adrenalin or something, because its so unusual.

FictionalCharacter · 23/06/2023 15:46

No matter how much money they had or whether the trip was a rich men's folly, they're all dead. It's pretty insensitive to keep on about the rescue effort now.

Whammyyammy · 26/06/2023 12:14

I was stopped by a volunteer collecting for the RNLI last week, she said donations have reduced since the publicity of life boats rescuing migrants from the channel.

escapingthecity · 26/06/2023 12:18

Because they were different kinds of story.
The migrant boat story was "hundreds dead in sinking". Very little hope of them being saved, not really an ongoing story.
The Titanic sun was "Sub visiting world's most famous shipwreck feared lost" - with the potentially for a dramatic rescue and hope they might still be alive. As a PP said, it's more comparable to the Thai boys in the cave or the Chilean miners stuck underground.

The death of one of a tragedy
The death of a million is just a statistic
