Just watching tv and this story came up.

amp.theguardian.com/society/2023/may/03/the-killing-of-joanna-simpson-she-was-bludgeoned-and-buried-by-her-husband-why-is-he-being-set-free

Link above to story.

How was it considered manslaughter?

I tried to Google why but nothing came up just links to news story.

So any of you guys who know system or court laws... I really don't see how it's manslaughter?

I mean to have packed a weapon, used it, move body all screams planned and thought about.

😬

Hope it's ok to post and ask, I don't normally watch news but this has me questioning the whole legal system 😅

That is a travesty of justice

why did “life” stop meaning “in prison till you die”?

I know :( they were interviewing the family, saying they were having to disclose to police where they go and live to aid their safety on his release, but to protect his privacy they were not allowed to know where he will be 😭 he's only done 13 years, probably the same as some negligible crime. Horrible.

It was premeditated murder. He had prepared the grave in advance. This was after a long campaign of domestic abuse and terror.

The manslaughter was due to ‘diminished responsibility’ so perhaps he was able to convince the court of some sort of mental illness. No doubt ‘provoked’ by Joanna.

It makes me so angry that repulsive murdering men are soon free to walk the streets if they murder women they had relationships with as if it’s some sort of free pass.

They should be treated as terrorists as in fact that is what they are. Joanna was abused over a long period of time and her children witnessed her murder. They should be subject to the harshest sentences.

It was considered manslaughter because, after hearing all the evidence, the jury found him not guilty of murder by a majority verdict after nearly 15 hours of deliberation. They accepted the defence's argument that he had been suffering from a stress related condition known as an adjustment disorder which can cause violent reactions.

I am not saying the jury got it right, but they heard all the evidence, not the limited highlights we have from the press.
