Shocking treatment of disabled child and family by roadside recovery service

Just read this in disbelief - really frightening

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/disability-65783539

This experience would be bad enough for anyone, let alone a family who were on the RAC's priority list as part of the motability scheme.

I just don't know how it can have happened; and then for it to be compounded by the lack of care afterwards leaving the boy without his wheelchair over the Bank Holiday weekend really defies reason. The longest we've had to wait is a couple of hours (with the AA) and we are not on a priority scheme.

Family left 'petrified' on M1 with disabled son after RAC no-show

No recovery service turned up despite breaking down at night with their disabled son in the car.

That is appalling

Yes, it just gets worse and worse the more you read of the family's experience. Let down by RAC and, in my view, National Highways and the police too.

Oh gosh that’s horrible and truly distressing to read. That poor family.

I knew it would be the RAC!! 🙄

The RAC abandoned my DH (who was on crutches) at the roadside, they claimed they 'couldn't find him' on a dual carriageway with a police escort so gave up and closed down the call.

When he called back they sent another driver who didn't speak to him, just the police officer and drove off. The police officer said it was going to take the RAC over 2 hours to remove the car so the police would have to arrange it and it cost us £222.

I complained to the RAC and they took exactly 20 working days to get back to me and offer me a £20 voucher. I told them to fuck off (in so many words).

This was 5 years ago but they’ve clearly not changed 😡

They're a shit show a friend had a truly awful experience with them last year, abandoned, them not collected, vehicle not collected. Denial of x,y & z etc etc truly awful.

You should have gone to the media.

To shame them and make others aware of their shit service.

musixa · 02/06/2023 19:29

I hope the 'goodwill gesture' they offered in this case was a bit more substantial than £20.

The RAC should be ashamed of their performance. I’ve had issues with them in the past and wouldn’t use them again. But this is really, really poor of them.

MooseAndSquirrelLoveFlannel · 02/06/2023 19:42

I got left for 6 hours, in the dark, alone, in the middle of a sketchy warehouse park by the RAC. Just my luck for the car to breakdown in an area i was just passing through.

Calliecaterpillar · 11/07/2023 19:43

Interesting. I'm disabled. I was left in our motability car from 5.30ish to about 1am in a layby next to a very busy dual carriageway/motorway after someone crashed into me with my child in tow a few months back

(I didnt need to go to hospital after being assessed at the scene but I also wasn't in any fit state to drive my then non roadworthy vehicle home afterwards)

Apparently finding anyone who could possibly fit my rollator in their vehicle was difficult that night ... in spite of the fact I explained it fitted just fine in my regular car boot and I was very cold and frightened and so was my child for hours on repeated calls

maryberryslayers · 12/07/2023 08:01

It's horrific.
The AA are in my opinion the only road side assistance worth having. You can actually call them even if you aren't covered with them and they will help, you have to pay/sign up but in an emergency it's useful to know.

gogomoto · 12/07/2023 08:39

I've decided not to bother with breakdown for this very reason. I've put the £150 a year I would have spent into a savings account and have it to pay for recovery in the future. We did pay for European recovery in france but that was only £38 for 2 weeks, the reason being my appalling french! (There was an English helpline with the cover)
