I actually think it about moving more (not necessarily formally exercising) and consuming less. The sedentary lifestyle and overconsumption of food is what leads to weight gain.

the interesting bit is just how much exercise formal or not this study reckons you need to lose weight...and to maintain it after this is what i found

i had to do loads

much more than the suggested levels of 30 minutes three times a week and such like

Since having DS I have joined a gym and go 3 times a week for an hour at a time and I SWEAT!!!!
I also keep active during the week, walking whenever I can.
I have lost a stone since the end of November........you just need to move and it does work.
Didnt stop me consuming a family sized bar of Dairy Milk last week in one sitting

Alambil · 19/02/2008 15:01

My personal trainer and nutritionists have told me that the 30 min 3 times a week is a lot less than what you need to do to lose weight but Government pitch it as 30/3 to get people to do it. They (govt) think if they said "well actually, you need to do at least an hour six times a week" that people just wouldn't bother and so they halved the recommendation!

emkana · 20/02/2008 08:25

I really don't see how it would be possible for the majority of people to fit that into their day.

Maidamess · 20/02/2008 08:38

I think that the 30 mins a day is a bit of a misnomer. I'm sure lots of people think they can sit watching telly all day, as long as they are upright and walking for at least 30 minutes of the day.

My mum for example, who is overweight, thinks sitting doing nothing is 'normal' and walking to the shops is being 'really really active'. So some peoples conceptions of what constitutes activity are very diferent.

maybe I'm being dim here - but surely weight training while it will tone your muscles with actually not really help "lose" weight. I'd always been told that muscle weighs more than fat - so if you weight train you increase muscle mass/weight and therefore either don't lose weight or stay the same???

dinny · 20/02/2008 08:58

muscle burns more calories than fat - it raises your metabolism, so the more muscle you have, the more calories you will burn

LaDiDaDi · 20/02/2008 09:06

Why does the woman in the article think that it will take you 90min to walk 4 miles?

"Dr Rena Wing, co-founder of the registry, said: "To burn off that many calories, you would need to walk 28 miles a week - more than a marathon. That's about four miles each day. That will take 90 minutes a day."

It would take me less than an hour, I'm sure as it takes me about 45 min to walk 3 miles into town pushing dd in her buggy. If 4 miles takes 90 min then you will not actually be working very hard or getting significant aerobic excercise.

misdee · 20/02/2008 09:09

does that woman walk verrrrrrrrrrry slooooooooowly. i can cover 4miles in under an hour.

arfishy · 20/02/2008 09:10

Yes, if you are working out a lot, don't use the scales to measure your weight-loss - they might not change. Use a body fat monitor and a tape measure. In terms of how your body looks, you can be an 11 stone very toned size 8 (ie more muscle) and a 9 stone untoned size 8.

My personal trainer mixes cardio with weight training. The weight training is crucial to keep your metabolism up and tone your body. Muscle burns calories even when you are resting .

You should also eat 5 times a day, especially breakfast. And the healthier the food the better - eg not eating and spending your 20 WW points on wine is not the best way to do it.

arfishy · 20/02/2008 09:11

Oh and you can work out for 3 hours a week at 80% of your max heart rate or 4 hours per week at 60% - it's all about the intensity. The key is that you should be getting puffed out.

It's like most of this Government advice - aimed at making people think it's achievable when really they're selling it short.

5 fruit and veg a day is the minimum - really you need more.

14 units a week is the maximum - you should have less.

And 30 minutes 3 times a week is bollocks TBH. If you're walking you need to do much more as it says in the article. And you need to feel like you've done it.

Tinker · 20/02/2008 19:28

I thought the 14 units a week was just a figure plucked out of thin air.

dinny · 21/02/2008 17:31

how would you fit in 90 mins a day? any ideas?

ivykaty44 · 21/02/2008 17:35

Park one mile away from your office/work place and leave your lunch in the car!
