here

Interesting development. Rather unfair to NOT reveal even a vague plan of how it would actually work.

Yeah, I'm reserving judgement until the full details are known and until the pilots have been evaluated. Even then, depends on the terms of reference. Although not sure they can reveal the full details - wouldn't that give the game away to potential abusers?

Could be useful given some child abusers do target single mothers, apparently... but could also give rise to all sorts of problems.

yes, edam.

btw - am NOT inviting a sex offenders debate at all!! just more narowly on this initiative.

The issue of people's privacy spring to mind. Surely even convicted criminals are entitled to privacy esp if they've 'reformed' . I don't know if convicted paedophiles can reform having said that, but give a dog a bad name....

I can see a lot of time being used up in providing said 'references' as well - think how long it takes to get a CRB check back as it is and they're only valid for x months anyway. It's a good idea in principle but I hope there's some safeguards built in.

I think it's the most pointless (but headline grabbing) initiative since the cones hotline.

how many people would actually ask for a police check from a new partner? how many new partners would simply bugger off on principle if asked for one? It's also likely to be abused - people will check up on their neighbours won't they?

lucinda - I am doubting it would work in such a way, despite the headline.

I am thinknig it is a way towards introducing selected members of the community into multi-agency panels that manage "dangerous offenders" in the community. More broadly rather than specifically.

Hope they have a number of sharp lawyers on their shoulders whe nthey draft the protocol.
