So.... should I bother doing the housework this weekend?

---------

George Bush has ordered a broken spy satellite to be destroyed before it hits the Earth because of potentially deadly toxic gas in the vehicle's fuel tank.
A military reconnaissance satellite

Officials said the preferred option was to fire a missile from a US Navy cruiser and shoot the hi-tech equipment down before it enters the planet's atmosphere.

The disabled satellite is expected to hit the Earth in the first week of March.

Deputy National Security Adviser James Jeffries told reporters that American President Mr Bush decided to intercept the satellite because of the potential danger posed by the rocket fuel it is carrying.

Mr Jeffries did not say when the attempted intercept would be conducted.

General James Cartwright, vice chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said that in a worst case scenario the rocket fuel could be deadly if inhaled.

He said a navy missile known as Standard Missile 3 would be fired from a ship.

The satellite is a classified National Reconnaissance Office spacecraft launched from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California in 2006, according to US officials.

The L-21 has been out of touch since shortly after reaching its low-Earth orbit.

Built by Lockheed Martin Corp at a cost of hundreds of millions of dollars, the satellite has fallen more than 43 miles to an orbit at around 174 miles above the Earth.

Because the satellite never became operational, it has toxic rocket fuel on board that would have been used to maneuver the satellite in space.

Yikes......not sure whether i should bother cleaning the car out now

bothered

Thing that jumps out at me when reading stuff like this is "at a cost of hundreds of millions of dollars" and "the satellite never became operational". Now I know I'm not a world political leader and there's plenty that I don't understand about these things, but I can't help thinking about all that money spent on something never used (and more money to spent destroying it) whilst also thinking about all the people who are scraping just to survive. I know that's an oversimplified way of looking at things, but...

What a load of rubbish by Bush - hydrazine is highly volatile and would not create 'a deadly toxic cloud'. Do they really think that the fuel tank is going to reach the ground intact?

It is almost certain that they do not want to risk intact parts of the satellite to land on foreign ground because of either the technology, or the equipment on board. Its a spy satellite.

I wouldnt worry about it landing here (southern UK). It doesnt go over directly ahead, the highest altitude it reaches here (certainly til the 25th Feb when the chart I've looked at runs out) is 79 degrees. In Scotland ites even lower in the sky. If it doesnt pass directly over head you don't need to worry!

Incidentally, in a few days time you will be able to see it passing by.
www.heavens-above.com/ put in your location to get a map etc.

Of course the other possible reason for them shooting it down is that the Pentagon see it as an ideal opportunity to practise target shooting. star Wars anyone?

ghosty · 15/02/2008 11:36

I reckon this is Bush's last ditch attempt at looking like a hero who can save the world.

Oh for goodness sake......

bran · 15/02/2008 11:57

I was just thinking the same thing as you oybbk about Bush (or his aides who can form a coherent thought) not wanting useful bits of the satellite to fall into others hands.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 15/02/2008 12:21

KerryMum - tis the same one!

ElfOnTheTopShelf · 15/02/2008 16:39

I love how the announced this morning that they were going to shoot down this toxic satellite so it landed in the Ocean... right after they reported how polluted the worlds Ocean's had become and the deadly affect we're having on them.

Piffle · 15/02/2008 16:43

DP says it is rare to get open chance to test long range missiles. He is in the industry sort of... He says though given previous tests he gives them a one in hundred chance of hitting it. Should paint an ally flag on it. No trouble hitting them. Cynical moi?

OhYouBadBadKitten · 15/02/2008 18:06

Exactly how I feel too Piffle.
