Teacher shot in US by six-year-old student files $40 million claim against school officials (thejournal.ie)

The link above is to an Irish news website where it states that a teacher who was shot twice by a 6yr old is suing school officials for $40m.

I wish more cases were brought because I honestly think that only when it hits the decision makers in the pocket will gun safety laws be brought in.

I think it is disgraceful that the school board, rather than try to champion gun safety, paid for metal detectors to be installed in every school and for every pupil to be given clear (as in see through) school bags.

Instead of dealing with the issue of how a 6yr old could get their hands on a gun, they took the easy way out.

Abby Zwerner accuses the school of allegedly ignoring multiple warnings that the boy had a gun and was in a “violent mood”.

Just mind boggling.

Putting measures in place to keep the school safe and championing gun safety are not mutually exclusive.

@prh47bridge - I don't believe I said they were mutually exclusive.

How about ensuring that 6 year olds can't get access to guns, or any pupil going to that school can't get access to guns even if their family has guns in their homes? Then by removing the gun, you simultaneously keep the school safe.
Having clear, see through backpacks does not manage that. It just allows everyone else to see what you have in your bag. If you have a gun you're unlikely to put it into a see through school bag. You'd have a holster or conceal it on your person.

I hope the teacher wins. I hope many more teachers bring cases. Cases against their employers, against the school district, and keep going up the chain until you get to decision makers and hold them accountable.

The fact you said "instead of" implies that they shouldn't be putting measures in place to make schools safer, they should only be championing gun safety.

Yes, America should have better gun control, but the school board can't prevent 6-year-olds having access to guns. All they can do is educate the pupils on gun safety (which they do) and put in place measures to ensure sure schools are safe. As they are supposed to be non-partisan and not get involved in political campaigning, they can't campaign for changes to gun laws.

“or any pupil going to that school can't get access to guns even if their family has guns in their homes? “

how could the school do this?

to note, I hate US gun laws and would like them reformed.
