I don't think they start school too early. Many kids are used to going to nursery all day long when school kicks in. So, I think the number of hours spent at school at age 3 (nursery) or 4 (reception) is fine. But I do think the targets for reading are a bit silly at age 4. I am generally a bit on the side of pushy competitive parent. But, when my 4 year old brings home books with instruction for her to read them to me, I must admit I really don't care whether or not my 4 year can read.

I personally think they should take the money they spend testing and measuring targets in the infants stage and use it to improve the quality of materials, teachers, etc. for say the juniors.
