Proposal to ban restaurants from serving obese customers

This is what is being proposed in Mississippi.

Well, I suppose smoking has been banned in public spaces so why not ban feeding the obese?

Conversely, will they propose that restaurants have a duty to feed the starving if they enter their premises?

Seriously though, is it really a restaurant's responsibility to exert control over their customer's feeding habit?

Something clearly has be to be done because the levels of obesity is at epidemic levels. The widespread availability of poor quality, calorie dense, unnutritious, cheap food does not help. Plus too many of the obese probably hardly move around other than walk to their car and they probably know very little about nutrition.

Education is the key but how can one incentivise people to start helping themselves and take responsibility for their health?

Let's just ban all legal activities!

I know, let's ban alcohol!

Or selling petrol - since driving is close to banned in some areas.

restaurants wont piss off their customer base. Stupid nanny law.

isaidno · 07/02/2008 12:28

It's ridiculous - I can't see how that helps anything.

Well, I was going to say it was bonkers because at least there would be some portion control in a restaurant, but now I see it's in the States, where even my healthy appetite has been challenged by some servings.

Desiderata · 07/02/2008 12:29

I don't think that education is the key. I know that smoking is bad for me, but it doesn't stop me doing it.

And people don't have to take responsibility for their own health. Much like your immortal soul or your innermost thoughts, there are some things that others cannot influence.

well i dont kniow why they are stopping there.

i mean fat people can just go home and cook or order a take away.

they just need to put all fat people on an island and only provide nuts and fruit.

OverMyDeadBody · 07/02/2008 12:46

It is not the restaurants' responsibility FFS! This won't reduce the obesity levels or encourage people to loose weight, it will just punish and ostricise them.

I hate nanny states

Maybe we should all have identity cards with our BMI stated on them.

ghastly idea

but I heard recently that a restaurant meal can use up a whole day and a half's calorie allowance without people realising

I bet it's partly due to.. if I've paid for it I'm eating it.

anyway this was leading to a whole new campaign to force restaurants to put calorie counts on the menu

another nanny proposal

people must have v odd attitude to food over there fio
did people think it was normal?

SheherazadetheGoat · 07/02/2008 12:58

isn't it all part of the rise and fall cycle. america is one of the wealthiest nations in teh world. it is going to eat itself to death and then it is someone else's turn to be top dog.

kiskidee · 07/02/2008 12:59

Mississippi is the fattest state. it is also one of the poorest states. Poverty and obesity go hand in hand for a lot of socioeconomic reasons. Banning overweight people from restaurants is just going to victimise them.

flossish · 07/02/2008 12:59

It'll never work. A lot of obese people are diabetic. If then denied food they may go into a hypo, and being America will sue. Therefore the restaurants will serve any obese people for fear of being sued...

needmorecoffee · 07/02/2008 13:01

we lived in the US for 2 years and the portions sizes were outrageous. Plus you had to drive everywhere cos there were no farking pavements or pedestrain crossings. Thats why they are all fat. Too much wrong food and cars.
Even the very poor in Mississippi have cars.

nailpolish · 07/02/2008 13:01

the portion sizes are ridiculous

and food is so cheap

america needs to get a grip IMO

goingfor3 · 07/02/2008 13:03

What would they do weigh people on entry!
