Without Elizabeth

This was in the New York Times.

Without Elizabeth, will any of us know how to be British again?
The queen loved her job and she was very good at it.
By Tina Brown

Without the queen, how will anyone know how to be British anymore? At the risk of sounding like Maggie Smith’s dowager Countess of Grantham in “Downton Abbey,” she was the last well-behaved person in our coarsening, transactional world. Amid the clamor of ubiquitous narcissism, her cool refusal to impose her views or justify her choices was ineffably soothing.

Well we’ve certainly remembered how to queue, and how awfully British is that. And I had about a dozen cups of tea yesterday, so there’s that. The national football team have an away fixture against Italy on Friday, so we may have to wait and see how much of Milan the fans manage to piss on before we can officially confirm that we’ve not lost our way as a nation.

I have the feeling that the use of the phrase "piss on" is an example of what Tina Brown was saying about the coarsening of British discourse.

I think British people still know how to be British, the Queen did not create the country, it was already here and like everywhere else has evolved. The Queen herself evolved pretty rapidly in 1997 in order to remain aligned with the British people.

It's an editorial article from from one of the most prominent newspapers in the world. Certainly not spam.

Oh give over OP, she was the same age as my old neighbour from down the road, who has bloody nice manners too, except she's not the queen so nobody cares. We are all doing fine, and will continue to do fine. Sorry that you're upset that she's gone though.

I could rant for days about how I dislike the royals but will shut my mouth on this thread, as I'm glad the Royals bring you happiness and that feeling of belonging and nostalgia, and that's a lovely thing.

Yes, it’s only recently that the British have used coarse language… this is a classic of the modern day…

By my life, this is my lady’s hand. These be her very C’s, her U’s and her T’s, and thus makes she her great P’s.

Which still has no clue about the UK, probably think we all sound like The Queen, look like Austin Powers and stop for Afternoon Tea at 4pm.

I have never looked to a Royal to teach me how to behave in public or otherwise. Because it's the 21st Century, not 1685.

I find it's quite common for people to imagine that they acquire their ideas and habits completely on their own - not from their parents, or friends, or national leaders. But in fact we do absorb ideas from others, and even if you browsed through basic international news, you would see how countries have had their ideas and demeanors and conduct undermined by bad examples from their leaders.
