So sad

Amy

This is just so tragic - Amy's kids are 6, 3 and newborn. Just before Christmas too.

those poor families

It was on our local news the other day. So very sad. One of the children I used to look after went to the school Amy taught at.

Tiggerish · 05/01/2008 20:56

Yogimum - i used to work with her. She was an amazing teacher and a lovely person

I'm & bloody

While these negligent hospitals persistantly go for lo-cost cleaning contracts with crappy "operatives" these sorts of cases are going to increase.

I know it was "unlikely" that the infection was contacted from the hospital but the coincidence is too great for me.

When they sack a few pen-pushers & use the money to pay for a decent cleaning service then I'll believe they are taking it seriously.

My heart goes out to those families.

Islamum · 06/01/2008 08:03

I'm with you bossy - how can it be coincidence? Just tragic

Shaniece · 06/01/2008 14:08

What an awaful story. How can this be a coincidence?

Lomond · 06/01/2008 14:12

The poor midwives as well dont you think?
God, to have to go back to work and put up with the shit that they have to put up with after something so God awful on their watch.
poor buggers.

AttilaTheMeerkat · 06/01/2008 17:19

I would think the bug was passed on by a member of staff who had a sore throat.

AnneMayesR · 06/01/2008 18:58

I agree...but sore throat is usually strep B right. I'll have to look up strep A. I should know really.

I have no doubt that there is a connection. It is so heartbreaking.

I work for the NHS and they threaten staff who won't come into work if they are sick. They don't want to pay for cover.

AnneMayesR · 06/01/2008 20:38

Oh duh..just looked it up and strep A is the major culprit in childbed fever. Serious fatal cases of it in otherwise healthy people has always occured but is on the rise. Microbiology was 10 years ago for me.

The whole thing is weird anyway.

zeebee · 06/01/2008 20:49

This has chilled my blood. While hospital cleanliness is an issue in its own right, from experience the hospital statement doesn't sound unreasonable - many people carrying the bug are asymptomatic. And of those infected by it most just have a sore throat which may not even require treatment. We were told some time ago that these bugs, and the deaths that can be caused by them, can go in cycles, usually around 17 years and there hasn't been a rise in incidence since the early nineties.......... What a terrible, terrible coincidence.

Am due to have my twins there in next couple of weeks. I was there last Monday and Thursday for appts too. My heart goes out to the families of those two poor ladies, I cannot imagine how awful it must be .

Am not overly concerned about giving birth there though, as all staff members have been swabbed now, and hygiene has been stepped up even more, but makes you wonder about any hospital really .

pyjamagirl · 07/01/2008 18:41

Sorry just reading this makes me so farking

In 1998 we lost our dd aged 5 weeks thanks to a hospital infection she was admitted at 4 weeks after developing bronchoilitis ,spent 3 days on a filthy ward then went rapidly downhill and began to have fits (apneas) they inserted a drip but the shock caused her to stop breathing she was resuccitated but taken to ICU where we were told she had a 98% chance of survival 5 hours later they advised us to get her baptised .

Noone could explain it her brain swelled and her organs shut down she was put on life support and we spent a very surrel 3 days in hospital a consultant then told us that he was disgusted that this had been allowed to happen in "his" hospital and it would never of happened 10 years ago (6 weeks later he denied saying this)

It was decided to turn off the life support and all the nurses and the consultant were crying i think I was the only calm one then

She died a horrible death because somebody didn't bother washing their hands or something used on her was cross contaminated

I battled for over 4 years against the hospital to admit what they had done but like my solicter said "old boys network" they will always cover each others backs

Sorry for rant but total disregard for life like this gets me so

Spink · 07/01/2008 18:57

pyjamagirl - just wanted to send you a squeeze. How wrong, and sad and terrifying.

pyjamagirl · 07/01/2008 18:58

Thanks spink it was very sad and scary ,I just can't think about how she died too often as it gets me ranting .

Tickle · 08/01/2008 08:14

This happened to my stepmother's friend. They have set up Jessica's Trust in her memory, so please take a look at their website.

As their site says, all mums-to-be and their partners should be aware of the risk of "childbed fever"

Tommy · 08/01/2008 08:23

I had Strep A after giving birth to DS3 last year. I was told that if I hadn't gone to hospital when I had then I would have been "dangerously ill". As it was, I was on about 4 lots of anti-bs and was in the the high care unit for 3 days.

Infection definitely did not come from hospital as I had a homebirth.

This story is very very sad and, I think, an extremely unfortunate co-incidence.

Egg · 08/01/2008 11:16

Oh PJ . I had no idea. So sorry for the loss of your beautiful DD.

pyjamagirl · 08/01/2008 12:06

s'ok egg not your fault ,good luck with the twins can't wait to see pics I haven't been on facebook for ages !!!

Egg · 08/01/2008 14:17

There's a new pic of my bump on my profile .

Twins will be here within two weeks as will be induced at 38 weeks if they are not here beforehand.

Also pretty much given up on facebook for now...
