Wetherspoons

Now, I don't live within a 200 mile radius of a Wetherspoons but it somehow reeks of Big Brother or at least intolerance of families...

Not read the article but heard it on the news. What about groups of people who meet up and some have kids with them and others don't - does that mean everyne stays sober then?

This whole thing really annoys me.

MummyDoIt · 04/01/2008 09:03

I don't think it's got anything to do with concern about parents drinking alcohol in front of children or being intolerant of families. What it boils down to is that families take up space and, once you've had your meal, they want you out so they can get another family at that table and make more profit.

Hamishsmummy · 04/01/2008 09:04

"child cruelty" ?????

bratnav · 04/01/2008 09:04

Well they have never been keen on families as far as I am aware.

My mother and I visited the local one a couple of years ago with my daughter who was asleep in her pushchair. We bought drinks and went into the garden, as soon as we sat down we were asked to leave as we weren't eating.

We actually caused a bit of a fuss (quietly) as the person who asked us to leave had seen us arrive and seemed to have waited until after we had bought drinks.

Never set foot in one since

Blandmum · 04/01/2008 09:05

Yesterday was dd's birthday, and we all wnet out for a meal. Would this mean that her grandmother was also banned???

How silly.

MummyDoIt · 04/01/2008 09:07

We use the one in Brixham when we go on our annual holiday there as it's relatively cheap and cheerful to get a family meal and it's within walking distance of the cottage we stay in. They've always been friendly enough but I'm not sure I want to go back now if this is their attitude. DH and and I normally order a bottle of wine between us for the meal. That's more than two drinks per person so will they ban people from ordering wine by the bottle as well?

Mummydoit - ask for large wine glasses (250ml)- then you'll only get a drink and a half each!

dilbertina · 04/01/2008 09:13

oops is your "s" broken?

Wisteria · 04/01/2008 09:17

Why don't they just ban children? Would be far fairer. It sounds to me like they want to have their cake and eat it, ie want the revenue from the added turnover serving family food but not the consequences!

I'd boycott them personally until they decide whether they are a family pub or not.

If there is a problem with individual families then surely that should be addressed, not issue this "2 drinks only" blanket rule for people with children.
I agree with mummydoit, it's more about intolerance of families.

lulumama · 04/01/2008 09:21

maybe instead of this ridicolous rule they should make their pubs more child friendly...

it all boils down to wanting to clear tables quicker to get more people in, in reality, nothing to do with safe guarding children

Blandmum · 04/01/2008 09:22

If there are specific families who are getting bladdered and letting their children run riot, those families should be asked to leave.

Minum · 04/01/2008 09:22

I wish all places would be clear and say - families welcome, or not. When I go out with DH on our own, I prefer somewhere without kids, when I take mine out I want somewhere they will be really welcome, theres plenty of room for both, but Wetherspoons cant seem to make their mind up.

filthymindedvixen · 04/01/2008 09:31

There have been several times when we have gone for lunch with friends to Wetherspoons when we have been the only customers. For 2 hours....
wankers.

newnamefornewyearbookwormmum · 04/01/2008 09:35

They should make up their minds if they want to be family friendly or not.

I don't like Wetherspoons much anyway but living in the SE, they're everywhere .

wessexgirl · 04/01/2008 09:39

Ours doesn't allow children anyway, despite being in a seaside resort popular with families.

According to the article the policy applies to soft drinks and coffee too -- so doesn't sound as though the policy is related to getting drunk.

wessexgirl · 04/01/2008 09:47

This is it, portandlemonaid, it's just a big fat two fingers up to families. I'll be voting with my feet. Hate the place anyway.

hmmmm - this is irritating in principle - but in practice we wouldn't have more than 2 rounds of drinks anyway when at a Wetherspoons with DS. Does anyone know if the making you eat with kids thing is part of the terms of having a children's license?
