How about a gas/electricity strike for Ukraine this Friday?

allthatmalarkey · 02/03/2022 12:53

What if we all did a strike against Russian gas on Friday? Didn’t use gas or electricity for heating or cooking all day (I’m going to allow hot water for tea and keeping clean).

It needs to be a chunky enough effort to make a big difference to your energy use that day - enough for it to register as a national statistic and hit the news and even reach the Kremlin.

Any takers?

Err. No. Hth.

Twinstudy · 02/03/2022 12:56

I doubt putin will give even the tiniest shit. I get where you're coming from though, it's frustrating not being able to do anything.

AlternativePerspective · 02/03/2022 12:58

So, presumably you would want people to:

Switch off their fridges/freezers thus allowing food to go to waste

No heating

No boiling kettles for cups of tea or baby formula

No cooked meals for children

No television

No lights

Because you would have to do all these things to make even the tiniest bit of difference.

Ridiculous idea.

SleepingStandingUp · 02/03/2022 12:59

So you're willing to make a sacrifice to make a point, but not enough to not have a cup of tea?

And no, I'm not leaving my kids without heating in this crappy weather.

What does it even prove? That we don't need has and electricity? We all know that's a fib. That we don't like him? I doubt he cares.

throughtheair · 02/03/2022 12:59

No thanks.

DetailMouse · 02/03/2022 12:59

I'm gonna say I think they hold all the cards re gas supply.

Plus we only get c. 5% from the Russians, so you'd be harming Norway. It's the rest of Europe that's so heavily reliant on Russian gas, which will have a huge impact on all of us if It's disrupted, but we aren't currently using it.

WeDontShutUpAboutBruno · 02/03/2022 13:01

Nope.

This is akin to standing in the doorstep and clapping for the NHS. Utterly pointless.

Martyring yourself so you can look good on social media (except you won't forgo your cuppa) while making absolutely fuck all difference.

Brevill · 02/03/2022 13:02

Nope nope and definitely not

So who is doing my job?

Or my engineers jobs?

Associatepeggy · 02/03/2022 13:03

Is this a joke I don't get?

Because the suggestions of how we can support Ukraine are just getting ridiculous.

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 02/03/2022 13:05

But if we do that, how will we all stream our Ukranian music? Sad

nearlyspringyay · 02/03/2022 13:14

Eh? What do you think that would achieve exactly?

Cyw2018 · 02/03/2022 13:15

And here we have someone who did not loose their power for a prolonged period following one of this winters storms.

HopefulProcrastinator · 02/03/2022 13:15

The live data from National Grid has our current electrical generation as 34% gas.

What people are using at home is nothing compared with running those gas fired power stations. Not to mention the volumes of gas being used by industry.

Having a gas 'strike' will barely register as a data blip even if everyone did it at home.

HopefulProcrastinator · 02/03/2022 13:16

P.S. the gas fired power stations will continue to burn gas even if people aren't using electricity because of forecast usage

dexterslockedintheshedagain · 02/03/2022 13:17

You've not really thought about this, have you?!

ChessieFL · 02/03/2022 13:17

Workplaces and schools etc wouldn’t be able to do this and even if everyone at home did it, it would only be a tiny fraction of the energy we use so wouldn’t make a difference. Even if it did, Putin wouldn’t care as he would know it would only be temporary.

SleepingStandingUp · 02/03/2022 13:18

Perhaps OP could send her saved gas and electricity over to the Ukraine for them to use?

Mossstitch · 02/03/2022 13:18

@WeDontShutUpAboutBruno 👍👏👏 from a fellow NHS worker who got comments from neighbours that I wasn't out clapping........... I actually was very ill with long covid picked up from a patient a week before first lockdown! Agree this suggestion is equally pointless🙄

Dumblebum · 02/03/2022 13:20

Oh dear op. Only about 4 percent of uk gas comes from Russia. Switching off for a day will not remotely impact Putin, who quite frankly has bigger issues at hand,

Jjjayfee · 02/03/2022 13:24

Only 5 percent of our gas is from Russia

MysteriousMonkey · 02/03/2022 13:25

Yeah no, I work from home and would like to keep my job

Cyw2018 · 02/03/2022 13:26

There is a reason we (Europe) have not yet sanctioned Russia in relation to gas, we (Europe) rely on Russian gas possibly more than Russia rely on the money generated by it.

OP I don't think Putin is going to worry about whether or not you use your Central heating for a day.
