It's terrible isn't it. Dh is realy upset - his Dad, who died in the Marsden 2 years ago, worked there for years, most of the curret crop of doctors had been taught by him, and te max fax dept was his baby. He said it feels like his Dad's gone and now so has his lifes work.

Prufrock

They have an excellent reputation for Cancer research too don't they?

Glad there are now casualties.

feel quite sad watching this
yes PrufrockingAroundTheXmasTree it is terrible. it is a good hosp.have worked there

PrufrockingAroundTheXmasTree · 02/01/2008 19:51

Yes - his dad died of pancreatic cancer and back in the 80's was one of the leading head and neck tumour surgeons. They're the best in Europe and if they can't get back up and running it will be devastating for patients and long term research.

NorthernLurker · 02/01/2008 19:56

Prufrock - I can see why your dh would take this hard - but I'm sure they will rebuild - and the skills and knowledge your fil imparted - well that is all safe in people's heads and will be passed on by them too. It can't be wiped out by a fire.
I actually think it's testimony to all the staff as well that they were able to do such a good job on the evacuation - I work in the NHS too - this kind of thing is everyone's nightmare!

edam · 02/01/2008 20:07

bloody hell. So glad everyone got out safely.

bossybritches · 02/01/2008 22:47

It's a brilliant place I worked there for a short while- but the place was an ancient nightmare. Hopefully the Sutton site can absorb the workload so they can carry on but it will interfere with a lot of vital treatments & many people in central London will suffer if they have to take trips out of town daily for their treatments.

As NL says well done them for hvivng effective evacuation procedures. I was on duty once when we had a fire in an old part of my hospital & it was a nightmare & that was only getting 2 wards cleared!!

I'm sure his Dad's work will live on albeit in another way/place -all those wonderful doctors he trained will not be wasted, the will find a way to get things going again I'm sure.

StealthPolarBear · 02/01/2008 22:49

I was thinking that as well, about the planning and precision that must have gone into the evacuation procedure etc
Just shows the NHS at its best

NorthernLurker · 03/01/2008 13:06

The news today says the damage was not as bad as first thought and apparently staff saved equipment as well as the patients!

Saggarmakersbottomknocker · 03/01/2008 15:11

Sounds like the evacuation went really well.

We were once on the verge of being evacuated from ICU with dd. Oxygen, syringe pumps and manual ventilation ready to go, thankfully at the last minute, we didn't have to. Scary

Royal Marden at Sutton saved my mum when any otehr reasonable hospital would have thrown the towel in. Incredible place. Hope they can get it up and running again soon for the sake of those like my mum.

Prufrock - your DH's dad must have helped so many people through his teaching, his work isn't about bricks and mortar. If he wants to understand his dad's true legacy, he should meet people like my mum - one of the unsavable cases - who has now lived long enough to meet DS and look after him and adore him.
