Is there already a thread about a 7 year old killed on a quad bike?

I saw this on the news last night, How stupid do you have to be to let a 7 year old child and a 10 year old child drive quad bikes at night on a country road.

The poor poor driver that hit the little girl must be in bits.

I hope her parents are going through the hell they deserve and that they can be prosecuted for letting a child on a road with a quad bike..

Stupid stupid people, and poor poor little girl

Yes there is.
Yes, it was illegal, not well thought out and far too dangerous. They failed to properly assess the risks and they have paid a terrible, terrible price for that.
I am sure the parents are devastated and I am sure the driver is too.

It's a really tragic story.

Upwind · 28/12/2007 10:39

Yes there is another thread.

This is a real tragedy, not a soap opera so perhaps some decency and consideration is in order? For all you know the grieving mother is a mnetter and idiots like you are gleefully twisting the knife. The parents made a mistake and have payed the ultimate price.

BrieVinDeAlkaSeltzer · 28/12/2007 10:42

It is truly tragic and people sitting in judgement on them in their hour of grief will not help bring the child back.

RubySlippedonastraymincepie · 28/12/2007 10:44

show some compassion Kimi

This is what I posted on the other thread:
I think there are a number of interesting points here. Yes, hopefully the parents were given full information about the quad bike when they purchased it. Although we can't know for certain, I would strongly suspect that if it were purchased through a 'proper'route (ie not some dodgy second hand dealer) then yes, they would have been given plenty of info about it, because the retail regulations in this country are very stringent. Just look at the average item you pick up in the shops - eg every plastic bag has a health warning on it. But that aside, it is the responsibility of the PARENTS to inform themselves fully of the law and to abide by it. Ignorance is no defence! Anyone deciding to buy a quad bike for a 7 year old surely has a duty to ensure that it is properly used. Another post mentioned on here that the car driver has been released without charge. If this is the case and they are entirely blameless, then I think it proves even more why this sort of thread is important as it gives an opportunity to people to voice their views. Imagine if that were your partner, or son, or daughter driving the car. Their life will be changed forever too; they will probably have flashbacks, maybe suffer from depression etc - in other words, an appalling decision like that made by the parents of the young girl will have a huge ripple effect.

TheIceQueen · 28/12/2007 11:25

The only reports I've read have said that the woman driver has been bailed until New Years Eve - not that she was released without charge.

inthegutter · 28/12/2007 11:30

No, I haven't seen any reports either. A post on the other thread mentioned that they had seen a report about this. Of course it may, or may not, be correct. The driver MAY have been acting illegally as well as the girls parents, in which case their behaviour may have been a contributing factor too.

SantaBabyBeenAnAwfulGoodGirl · 28/12/2007 11:32

i find this following on from yesterdays thread quite unpleasant..it is real life and think it shows little respect for a family in mourning

donnie · 28/12/2007 11:34

" I hope the parents are going through the hell they deserve"

what a spiteful and nasty little snidey remark. Get back into your sty.

Enough already.

inthegutter · 28/12/2007 11:34

Of course it's real life. That's why it's worthy of discussion.

JodieG1 · 28/12/2007 11:35

I'm sorry but people are far to quick to say poor parents and think about them. Well I think they should have had some bloody sense, what fool doesn't know a 7 year old on a quad bike is dangerous ffs? Stupid people. I feel for the poor girl and driver.

inthegutter · 28/12/2007 11:36

And donnie, I agree that the remark from the OP was disgusting and in very poor taste. I have no interest in bashing the parents. It is the repercussions of their decision which I'm discussing.

Aitch · 28/12/2007 11:37

what an odd and awkward OP. sometimes people really should just think things...

inthegutter · 28/12/2007 11:39

inthegutter - would you mind using the other thread to discuss this - I (and Carrie at HQ) are hoping that this particular thread disappears off active convo's......

Perhaps Carrie could delete the thread if she wants to??

donnie · 28/12/2007 11:39

agree inthegutter - some people are just stirring for the sake of it though, the OP being a case in point as far as I can see.

I also think the repercussions are interesting, like what the mitigating factors would be if the driver of the other vehicle were to be prosecuted, given that the quad bikes should not have been on the road in the first place.

Kimi has a long history of stirring though.

inthegutter · 28/12/2007 11:44

interesting point donnie, about what the situation would be were the driver to be charged with any offence.

Upwind · 28/12/2007 12:16

I know I should let this spiteful thread die, but I fail to understand why so many people are so eager to condemn the bereaved in a tragic situation like this. Do the derive some perverse pleasure from others' misfortune? Or maybe they just relish a chance to be self-righteous?

The poor, poor SUV driver involved in this accident was arrested "on suspicion of causing death by careless driving while unfit through drink or drugs". She has been released on bail until New Year's Eve.

upwind, I did not let my child ride a quad bike under a car, so I don't think I am the one thats an idiot here.

OP posts:
KIMIfullofhopefor2008 · 28/12/2007 15:49

Also I do not stir, I tend to speak my mind.
I think anyone with even one bit of sense would see it was a stupid thing to do and they have paid a very very high price that they will have to live with for ever.

The news last night said the driver passed a breath test.

And no I do not have any sympathy for the parents right now as I am so bloody angry someone would think this was a good thing to do, put a child on a quad bike and ride in the dark on a road, I have a seven year old and I just looked at him and thought how bloody stupid, 7 year olds are tiny.

No I don't think they care what I think, I am just a name on a talk board as is everyone else here.

Whatever the facts, the one thing that is a fact is this...
There is NO legal reason what so ever for a child to be on a public road on a quad bike, have any of you seen the size of these things, the sort of power they have?

I am truly sorry that my OP was so harsh, but this (and I don't know why) has just made me so angry, the thought that adults could let a child do something so dangerous, if either of my children wanted to do something like this I would say no, no matter how much begging, pleading, ranting was involved.

A child that should be playing with her Christmas gifts and eating way too much chocolate today is instead lying in a morgue and a family has been ripped apart, and someone else is having to live with the fact they hit and killed a child with their car.

It is senseless and could have so easily have been avoided.
Children are a gift, not a right and not something you gamble withs safety.
