According to BBC morning news programme, it was a proposal to improve the current rules where you have up to 6 years to repay the NI contributions you would have paid when working. They're leaving it as it is.

great. now i can look forward to eating catfood when i'm old.

(I know this isn't funny. I'm a SAHM and very definitely screwed)

foofi · 20/12/2007 08:16

Don't suppose it makes a lot of difference TBH. It's a pretty uselessly-low amount anyway, so getting only 80% of it, or whatever, when you retire, probably doesn't leave you much worse off.

foofi · 20/12/2007 08:17

What I mean is, if you want a decent amount of pension, you need to make your own arrangements not rely on the state pension.

found this from mail online

i was going to pay!

really foofi? i don't understand it much tbh

Well, I have already been off work for 11 years, so even if I repay the last 6 years now (which I'm not in a position to do) I would have lost 5 years out of a working life of, say, 40 years.

foofi · 20/12/2007 08:24

Southeastastra, they're not saying you can't repay it as before, they're saying they're not making changes to improve what it was before.

awayinNaeManger · 20/12/2007 08:27

you had to make extra payments within 6 years. they were talking about extending it for SAHMs so that we have more time to make up the missed payments. (cause you know we're all rolling in dough within 6 years of having the kids)
they looked into extending the time and decided against it.

andaRubberDuckinapeartree · 20/12/2007 08:30

I thought that if you got child benefit then your NI contributions were covered? I'm now horribly confused and slightly panicking.

edam · 20/12/2007 08:41

I thought the same as RubberDuck?

nametaken · 20/12/2007 13:53

Panic not ladies - if you are not eligible for a pension when you reach retirement age your income will be topped up with benefits so:

it doesn't make any difference whether the government calls the payment "pension" or "benefit" you will still get the same amount.

oh we can relax then
