Poor child.

These things need regulating right now. I can see that potentially they pose a great solution to traffic congestion, but they are a menace to pedestrians when ridden at high speeds on pavements, and a menace to themselves when riders weave in and out of traffic, no helmet, no age limit, no Highway Code awareness.

Of course this scooter should not have been being used in the park at all, but no one seems to know what any of the rules are.

Poor child Sad

Well looking at the link it says escooter are being trialled by certain areas which is why some council areas have them.

But if you're not in those earea it seems illegal

Poor child, poor parents.

They need to be treated like light mopeds. Even cyclists in U.K. are not regulated properly, often on pavements etc. The issue is not enough traffic enforcement police.
In countries were cycling/escooters are normal mode of transport for many there are rules, even payable tags require for bicycles (to part fund traffic enforcement)

They're not really an alternative to car travel. Perhaps an alternative to bus travel or walking.

We have the voi ones here for hire and of course illegally ridden private ones. As a car driver you definitely need your wits about you and indicating or following rules at junctions and roundabouts is rare. In fact I was quite surprised when I saw one rider indicate and move into the correct position at a junction- up until then I didn't realise they had indicators! I don't understand it because they are so vulnerable in the traffic.

A boy was killed on one in my area a couple of days ago.

@MsTSwift

Cars are more dangerous and polluting in cities. They should veer towards banning cars in all but exceptional circumstances and only have scooters.
Not in the bloody pavements and in parks, they shouldn’t!

In our local park young men love you ride them at you and swerve at the last minute. I can see they might be good for the planet but most users are riding dangerously and as far as I can see because they can't be arsed to walk

Italiandreams · 21/07/2021 19:23

I understand the idea of helping the environment but I can think of very few occasions when I could realistically use a scooter instead of my car. They seem to be used by people and then abandoned all over the place here.

Dollpiglet · 21/07/2021 19:24

At night we have 'packs' of young adults on them, you see a few shining lights suddenly in front of your car, on the wrong side of the road, weaving around.

prh47bridge · 21/07/2021 20:14

They are regulated and it isn't difficult to find the rules. The problem is that many e-scooter users (including, it would seem, the one involved int this collision) choose to ignore the rules.

In general, e-scooters can only be used on private land. The exception is those that are rented as part of government-backed trials such as the one currently running in London. Rented e-scooters have a top speed of 15.5mph. London uses special technology to reduce this to 8mph in some areas. You need a driving licence with category Q entitlement to use an e-scooter on public roads, which means the minimum age is 16. You do not have to wear a helmet, but they are recommended.

These rules need to be publicised more and enforced by the police (who currently turn a blind eye too often). That won't eliminate the problem but it should help to control it.

MsTSwift · 24/07/2021 13:46

Cars in city centres just don’t work and should be banned. Our small city is constant gridlock. I think this will happen we have certain diesel vehicles banned from the centre cars will likely be next.

lollipoprainbow · 24/07/2021 13:55

I can see this becoming more and more of a menace, they are getting more and more popular.

EffOrf · 02/08/2021 17:07

Our town was one of the pilots for these, these just seem to be used as playthings by the local youths, so not really saving the planet at all
