here

am i right in thinking that during the transplant assessment they assess state of mind any way, and he so obviously wants to die, that he wont get listed?

if he wants to die then he should be given a transplant.

Dropdeadfred · 23/11/2007 13:15

would you want your beloved family member's kidney to go to him though?

Camillathechicken · 23/11/2007 13:46

not that simple though, it is? George Best got a liver tranpslant and it was obvious to all th world that he would not and could not conquer his drinking.
if he is depressed/ suicidal, is he in a fit state of mind to make a decision about things, IFYSWIM

personally, i should think there are 100 more suitable and worthy recipients of a liver, but life is not that black and white

SoupDragon · 23/11/2007 13:47

He doesn't want a kidney though.

Blu · 23/11/2007 13:48

if ian Huntly gets a donor liver, I'll eat my own.

It'll never happen.

blueshoes · 23/11/2007 13:51

He should get a transplant - of another diseased liver ... and another ...

Misdee · 23/11/2007 14:17

loving all these suggestions.

but seriously, they do assess state of mind, and responsibilty to self medicate etc, and he has had, what, 3 or 3 suicide attempts. and this is appaently because of his last sucicide attempt.

so i doubt he would go on the list.

but if he does, then i fear for the damage it could cause to the donor register.

OP posts:
Nbg · 23/11/2007 14:18

He should be made to live and not take the easy route out.

IMO him rotting and festering and thinking everyday about what he did is a small price to pay.

Let his mind torture him.

Blu · 23/11/2007 14:21

Yes, this is about the credibility of Organ Donation, not the treatment of IH.

Blu · 23/11/2007 14:22

And shame on the Sun for even anticipating a spurious 'monster gets new life' scandal. They are revolting.

Misdee · 23/11/2007 14:24

serves me right for looing on the sun (they were meant to call me two days ago for interview about organ donation, now i think i know why)

OP posts:
SpacePuppy · 23/11/2007 14:32

He tried to kill himself and then told them before the end, so I don't think he is serious about killing himself, there a probably more ways to be successful than taking an overdose. It's a tough call, and probably borders on his basic human right to treatment, but I doubt they will treat him if he refuses treatment.

totaleclipse · 23/11/2007 14:39

If he really wants to die, then he simply refuses a trnsplant, you need to sign a consent form I assume.

Misdee · 23/11/2007 14:42

yes total you do.

take it with a pinch of salt - it's in the Sun fgs

This is about the third time he's taken an OD & this time it's made him turn yellow as he's knackered his liver. Shame.

Sorry to be brutal but what goes around comes around let him slip quietly away which is more than he let those two poor lasses do.

I for one would be apopletic if there was ANY suggestion of wasting tax-payers money & a perfectly good transplant organ on him.

Sorry if this upsets anyone but my usual christian philosophy deserts me on this one.

paulaplumpbottom · 25/11/2007 23:58

If they gave a liver transplant to George Best they'll give one to anybody

susiecutiemincepies · 26/11/2007 00:06

And this kind of reporting is going to do SO much for the Organ donation campaign isnt it...

FGS, this is just horrific. It doesnt matter who needs what an why... the problem is, that there are not enough donated organs to supply those in need with them.

the suns report on this is only going to damage the cause for thousands of people in desperate need of new organs. I can see all those lovely sun readers saying " i'd rather take mine with me if it means that monster wont get them" and what about all the other people that will get to live if they were to receive one of the other organs...

Yet another 'red top' socially responsible headline.

flooplowder · 26/11/2007 00:06

I don't agree with those who see George Best and that man in the same light. It was totally wrong that George Best abused both his and his transplanted liver, but you can't possibly see them as the same, George Best was not the animal that Huntley is.

bossybritches · 26/11/2007 09:33

Susie sadly you're right-totally irresponsible of the Sun to scaremonger like thath.

wannaBe · 26/11/2007 09:39

it concerns me that this would be reported. IMO there are people who would be reluctant to donate their organs if they thought there was a possibility of them going to save the life of the likes of him.

Piffle · 26/11/2007 09:45

Going on the transplant list is optional is it not, so he would have to want to go on it for a start. And I doubt with his reckless disregard for his own life he would not be deemed a suitable candidate on that alone.
Sounds unlikely at best.

But a slow painful death... there are ont many folks I would wish one on but I think he is one of them

ILikeToMoveItMoveIt · 26/11/2007 09:51

Lots of things going on here:

  1. He needs to pass a psych assessment.
  2. If transplanted he will require medication for the rest of his life.
  3. I think the docters can overule his wishes, whatever that may be.
  4. Death from liver failure is pretty horrendous. Some may say he deserves it, some may say no one should have to go through it.
  5. A donor organ has to become available in time.

Paula - if you have liver damage due to alcohol you are subject to regular blood tests to monitor any possible consumption. If you are on the register for a liver and test positive, you are taken off the list for at least six months. So, George Best got his organ because he was clean not because he had any special treatment.
