Why is this form of littering worthy of any respect?

Bakewell love locks removal plans leave families 'devastated' https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-derbyshire-56525456

If someone came and attached a 'love lock' to your fence without getting your permission, you'd be perfectly within your rights to remove it. Regardless of whatever sentimental reason they had for attaching the lock. Why do people think it's acceptable to do this?

I can see why they are upset, but would they rather the bridge was left to become damaged and unsafe?

nancywhitehead · 04/04/2021 12:23

I agree it's a form of vandalism and causes massive inconvenience for local councils who have to get someone out to cut them all off.

It's the permanence of it that annoys me, it's not even like graffiti that can be easily removed. Some of those padlocks are huge.

punkingscissors · 04/04/2021 12:28

They should go and get their lock back assuming it's relatively local.

SmallPrawnEnergy · 04/04/2021 12:32

I think it’s a really odd thing to do, go put a lock on a bridge for what purpose? People are idiots if they think it could be added to forever and not cause damage. If you hang so much emotion on a padlock you need to put it on your own property so you can ensure it’s longevity.

ASimpleLobsterHat · 04/04/2021 12:32

I hate this lock trend - it makes a bridge look so ugly.

2 sections of the Pont des Arcs bridge in Paris have collapsed under the weight of padlocks in the last couple of years, threatening boat passengers who frequently pass underneath.

I think its a lovely gesture - but really unnecessary. How many folk are really going to go back and visit their lock? Or even be able to find it again?

The locks look awful, how can adding a padlock to rust on a bridge be a symbol of love?

EnjoyingTheArmoire · 04/04/2021 12:56

They look awful, all rusted and messy. Not nice to brush past them when the bridge gets busy either.

I do understand why people do them, but think people place too much sentimentality on a physical object. You don't need to have the piece of metal there to be able to visit Bakewell and remember your loved one/anniversary etc
