WTF is going on in Italy?

Seriously, wtf?

It's like a parody. Ok, someone died, someone got charged with her murder (not confessed, not convicted), so they passed laws to be able to evict people of the same nationality?!?!

Am I missing something? The law was passed to deport EU citizens who are a threat..so surely removal depends on an individual being personally identified as a threat - as in Mr Z did this or that, not eany meany miny mo you are Romanian, out you go.

IYSWIM.

Or did I read it wrongly?

NotQuiteCockney · 04/11/2007 14:07

Yes, the law is for all EU citizens, but it sounds like it's just Romanians they're evicting. The prefect of Rome called them 'animals' according to yesterdays Guardian.

It's tacit state approval for groups of Italians to attack Romanians, which is what is happening ...

It doesn't actually mention the nationalities of the other 12 who have been marked for expulsion.

I do find it worrying that simply being 'a threat' constitutes cause for removal from the country as opposed to having a criminal conviction.

I assumed that 'threat' meant someone who was a proven criminal. Remove them and remove the threat of them committing further crime.

I think the problem arises now that immigrants are settling in Italy as opposed to passing through, which is what they have done in the past. Italy has had a very lax view on immigrants because of this, allowing many illegals into Europe because they know fine they would move on to other countries.

According to my Italian cousin the Roma are concerned a great "problem" at the moment. They are the cause of every single crime in the whole of Italy if you listened to their media which is interesting if you consider the Cosa Nostra, ahem!

In every immigrant community there will be criminals but as with the resident population this will be a minority. The Roma in Glasgow are also considered a "problem" although if there is a crime wave because of the 6,000 living there then the media must be keeping it a secret!

The idea of repatriating convicted criminals is sensible, but this is something else that was a knee jerk reaction to popular opinion on immigration.

To repatriate people because they are perceived a threat is very slippy slidy and dangerous.

I go to Italy regularly and find increasinlgy that people there are worried about this group or that group that they avoid buying products from certain countries etc. The media doesn't help when reporting things in the first person (illegals coming to OUR country) etc. Roma have not been well integrated and are living in something akin to shanties on the outskirts of cities. In poverty and yes some of the children do take to crime. They are very very poor and excluded.

My view is that a country that exports lots of people need to accept that people will also come to their country. However, this is wider issue for Europe in general. I wouldn't be surprised if other countries take this up. Sort of defeats the idea of open borders for Europeans and something more sinsister possibly.
