I thought of you and Peter when I heard about this LVOC. Hope they get some answers soon

Sheherazadethegoat · 03/11/2007 10:08

i am sure i am not the only mumsnetter who was thinking about you when they came out yesterday. hopefully it is just an unfortunate collection of circumstances. how is peter?

saggarmakersbottomknocker · 03/11/2007 10:10

Tis worrying LVOC. Probably lots of reasons not necessarily related to the 'team' themselves I expect.

Poor quality organs for a start - if there's not many around are they taking some that are a little less viable than they would normally I wonder. And again lack of organs = sicker recipients to start with doesn't it?

There's a boy from dd's school on the urgent list at the moment - well hopefully he's still hanging on anyway

LadyVictoriaOfCake · 03/11/2007 10:10

peter is doing very well.

i know sagger, i think ts just possibly an unfortunate mix of sicker patients who have been waiting longer for organs and organs that arent as good quality, which before wouldnt have been used, because of the crisis situation organ donation has gotton into.

i hope the boy in your dd's school is still hanging on.

In the end LV, peter is an 'N' of 1.

Statistics are all well and good, but for you, and for Peter all that matters is that he is well. He is either well or he isn't.

Remember too, that Peter is a young man, who will be returning to a young man's level of fitness, which I would imagine would significantly bump up his chances. While he was terribly ill because of his heart and the associated complication, he was otherwise a fit young person, IYSWIM. (mad as that statement sounds) You cannot compare him to someone much older, who got into their situation by smoking 40 fags a day, for example. their baseline level of 'fittness' wouldn'#t be the same

MB, peter was transplanted at harefield.

we were talking about his physical level of fitness before he transplant last night over dinner (oh we have very fun conversations in public lol). before his LVAD he was in a v vv poor state and the LVAD op was considered more dangerous than transplant, but transplant wasnt an option for much longer as he was that ill. hios kindeys and liver were starting to fail.

when he had his transplant, although his brain had gone a bit screwy, his physical fitness was at the best it had been for a while. he was a good weight, no fluid retention problems, his kidney and liver functions were normal-ish. he was physcially well, if that makes any sense at all.

yes, other than the fact that he was about to peg it, he was in good shape!

I know what you mean about mad conversations, we have them all the time.

the thing is Peter is young, and has the resilience that comes with being young. The older you get, the more you lose all of that. think how quicly the kids bounce back from stuff that would leave us floored

the stats could well be because, as you say, the general state of the recipients being in a poorer state etc etc.

Glad that Peter is doing so well

LadyVictoriaOfCake · 03/11/2007 10:29

how is mr MB?

Although it's terribly sad for the families involved I actually think it's very reassuring that they've put the ops on hold while they investigate, even though it may well just be bad luck/an unfortunate set of cicrcumstances. Hopefully it means the medical profession has learnt its lessons from Bristol etc and doesn't just plow on regardless when the statistics aren't great.

Blandmum · 03/11/2007 10:31

a bit better than yesterday, but not good in the over all state of things. Oncologist wants him hospitalised. He doesn't want to go, and wants the tests as an out patient
