I am gutted. Not because Hamilton didn't win, because he lost due to his own mistakes. Mostly I am upset because the whole F1 world has been rocked by everything that has happened this season.
I do think Alonso should have won, but Massa did need to step aside for Kimi, as his team mate (something he often has to do as a matter of fact).

Ron Dennis had a world champion on his team and he treated him like a second driver. Macca only have themselves to blame. They wanted a golden boy and now they have nada...not even Alonso.

I think Hamilton still is a golden boy. Its his first season - he has done fantastically well!

sugarmatches · 21/10/2007 20:06

He gets away with too much that other drivers would never...

I wanted Hamilton to win but actually, on reflection I think it was a good result. reikkinon (sp) kept his nose clean and got on with the job. Tortoise & hare....

SatanGeorge · 21/10/2007 22:03

Alonso acted like a spoilt child throughout the season and never deserved to win the championship. He should drive for Ferrari, they would suit each other.

It would have been nice for Lewis to get the championship, but he has still had the most successful rookie season ever.

sugarmatches · 22/10/2007 10:36

I disagree completely.

Formula 1 has had a controversial season this year because everyone put all the eggs in the basket of one person. Lewis Hamilton has years to win the title, he just wanted to beat Alonso's record of the youngest driver to win. Even Alonso had to race a few years before he won.
I would have liked to see everyone calm down a bit about Hamilton and just get on with racing. Even the commentators were speculating (hoping) 2 drivers would crash in front of LH and even suggested that Alsono give way for his teammate.

Put the goldenboy aside for a minute and think...if you were Alonso (2 time world champion that MacLaren were drooling over for a few seasons!!) how would you feel about being pushed aside in favour of a rookie driver, just because he was British! He was turned into the Dick Dastardly of F1 by the press when no one really knows what happened.

It was Britishness gone mad! I seriously wanted to vom watching the before race show. Showing all the former British winners as if it was in the bag. If nothing it put too much pressure on a young kid to win.

I am pleased Raikkonen won, because he showed the most decorum throughout the season. But mostly I am glad he won, because it means that Ron Dennis gets to lie in exactly the same bed he made this season.

Alsono is the best driver, IMHO. But that does not mean I have to like everything he does.

I'm really happy. McClaren cheated - they were excluded from the team championship because of it - therefore IMO their drivers have had an unfair advantage. Sunday's race was karma as far as I am concerned.

Alonso & Hamilton have behaved like spoilt brats - I agree with much that Sugarmatches says - except that Alonso is the best driver - the World Champion Raikkonen is that for me

As for the commentary I agree it made me sick. Everytime that picture of a smug hamilton was shown (before & after each ad break) DH & I just laughed in a very schaden freude like way!!

sugarmatches · 22/10/2007 13:45

Yes the title proves that Kimi is the champion. But he did not win at all last season, which is why I think Alonso is a better driver. My dream would be Alonso at Ferrari (oh, and a lottery win!!), but there is no way they would give up Massa after what he did yesterday. So it is just a pipe dream!

I honestly am not sure why I still support Alonso...I just do!

Alonso is a cheat. He has used dirty tactics on more than one occasion. He was the driving force behind McClaren losing the 'cheating' row. Even the Spanish think he is a cheat and they adore him!

I think McClaren have been more than fair in their treatment of both drivers when Alonso at times didn't deserve it.

I agree that Lewis has years ahead of him and I am pleased for Kimi but it would have been a total farce if Alonso had won it.

Anyway, 'tis all in the air now until after the appeal over the fuel irregularities.

TheQueenOfQuotes · 22/10/2007 17:37

ahh it's all fixed.

sugarmatches · 22/10/2007 18:37

Schumacher cheated worse than any driver...and he is revered.

Everyone cheats in F1 and I do think it is fixed at times.
Lots of bad politics, like any other sport.

Wow, if you really think everyone cheats, why bother following it?

Not everyone reveres Schumacher, I always disliked him. I agree he did play dirty, but at least he was never as blatant about it as Alonso. And if you want a case of a team unfairly treating a driver because they had a champion in their pocket, then Schumi and Barichello is a perfect example.

Yes, there are too many politics, especially this season. It has marred the sport but hopefully it will recover.

TheQueenOfQuotes · 22/10/2007 18:57

We only followed it as DS1 saw something about Lewis Hamilton on the news ages ago and ever since then everytime he's heard "F1" mentioned, or seen it advertised he's wanted to watch it .

vacaloca · 23/10/2007 10:01

Spaniards don't think Alonso is a cheat - they think he's been hard done-by this season. I was in Spain last week and heard nothing else all week (had a few drinks with my dad in the local bar!). They'd love a Spaniard to win, obviously, but they don't think Alonso is a very nice character . I texted my dad after the race to say 'good result' and he replied everyone at the bar was clapping after Raikonnen won - they're hugely pleased neither Alonso nor Hamilton got the title.

SatanGeorge · 23/10/2007 10:06

I was in Spain watching the qualifying when Alonso screwed Hamilton out of a chance at another run. I based my opinion on what the locals had to say about him that day

PeachyFleshCrawlingWithBugs · 23/10/2007 10:15

Hamilton did lose palce due to his own errors BUT I think McLaren needs to take responsibility for the grearbox isue- you could see the poor chap clicking up and down the tiptronic as he drove and I think that's what eventually damned him, the poor start was saveable.

I think the result was fair, although would of course liked to have seen Hamilton win. Alonso just isn't a team palyer- the anture of F1 is that it resets each year, you can't assume anything from your drive last year except a job. And to criticise Mclaren for palying placements when ferrari always paly at that doesn't balance.

Alonso also had to apologise for attempted blackmail if reports are correct- that's jut not nice for anyone, whatever their nationality or team.

yes maLaren cheated but so did other teams in the season and seemed to hget less penalisation (not just the petrol issue- there were tyre incidents as well). Ia ctually think Ferrari has become far too powerful and holds to much sway with the regualtors. bernie Ecclestone saying he wanted Kimi to win beforehand was unfair, for a start.

i'm not a fan of Schuey either- dating abck from the days when I was a fan of villeneuve and all that dogfighting that year I guess.

Whether or not you like mailton- he's made the popualrity of F1 shoot through the roof! I sued to follow it avidly- even changed the date of my 18th party as it clashed with Silverstone- but lately with all the technicalities my interst fell off, I'm back on board now and the stats seem to show that not only are a lot of us oldie fans returning there are a lot of newbies getting interested- that's a positive. People like hamilton grew up in the days of Hill etc, we need inspiration for the next generation of drivers. And if that peson can inspire groups F1 hasn't traditionally reahced out to- black single aprent families for a start- then so much the better.

Obviosuly that doens't buy him any rights win wise and he knows that- in the press today he says that he wants to win on the track not in the courts and thats good, I think. However cheating is cheating and if teams were found to be cooling petrol they have to be disciplined as others would be whatever race it was, the fact the championship hung on it has to be held irrelevant in making the judgement imo.

Which amkes me sound like a huge hamilton fan, i'm not- although I have some admiration. No, I still get all excited when old Mika appears LOL - much mre my cup of tea! (baby would be Mika- well we already have a Stirling after all- but awful with surname).

SatanGeorge · 23/10/2007 11:05

I just wish they would take away some of the technology and put the real racing back in the hands of the drivers.

PeachyFleshCrawlingWithBugs · 23/10/2007 12:11

Totally agree Stg, although apaprently someof the new systems are being withdrawn for next year- hopefully a step in the right direction?
