here

i think this is so sad. you don't have to support the war to support our soldiers. these men and women have been there for over six months.

even the the telegraph talks about how local councils are rejecting calls for parades to welcome them home.

Well
I am in two minds about this
I mean, it's their job

I'm with CD on this one too I'm afraid....

I also wonder if there is problem because of the nature of the war.

At the end of WW2 for instance it was marking the end of a very real threat to this country and the freedom of everyone who lived here. The soldiers returning had fought to save this country. This war - whatever your thoughts on it being right or wrong - wasn't about our country.

Don't such parades normally take place once conflict is over? The war in Afghanistan is definitely not over. It's nice for these guys that they're home, but in the case of the hideous mess in Afghanistan, parades seem grossly premature to me.

I agree that there is very little media coverage of servicemen returning home.
However, as has been said, the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan are still going on.
And, what about soldiers who returned from Bosnia, Kosovo etc? If we had a parade for every returning battalion we'd be having them every few weeks.

I think the problem is more to do with the amalgamations of the regiments. No communities have 'local' regiments with lots of local men and women in them so the links have been severed between soldiers and community.

In the City of London, on a SUNDAY?

And people are coming home every day from 9 month deployments. You'd need a permanent parade at Brize Norton or down here in Portsmouth.
