Cave deaths in Thailand

here

Very sad, and a very frightening way to die.

I've visited caves in that national park in Thailand - very possibly the same caves - the river runs through the caves and it was hard to climb through them. I clearly remember thinking that if there was a flash flood we would all drown, there was no escape.

How terrifying.

It says there is one survivor who clung onto the cave ceiling to survive.

This is really tragic. Sadly - the tour companies do not warn people about the damgers of going to the west coast of thailand in the monsoon season. Another example is the recent plain crash. The storms and flooding are incredibly dangerous.

you're right 3littlebats. we certainly weren't warned of the dangers. But once inside the caves, I realised how potentially dangerous they could be - and unfortunatley have proven to be in this case. Two of the dead were Thai tour guides.

What a terrifying experience for the young woman who survived, only to watch her boyfriend being swept away.

The tour companies are more interested in money. Most Thai people are very poor and even those in the tourist industry are not very well paid - but there is no welfare state or benefits of any kind, so even if the tour guides were aware of the danger, their jobs would be very important to them. Some of these people are supporting entire families - 3 or 4 generations. It is awful - for everyone - guides and tourists.
