Should pregnant women be banned from smoking in light of new research?

See here

"Nine out of 10 mothers whose babies suffered cot death smoked during pregnancy, according to a scientific study to be published this week. The study, thought to be one of the most authoritative to date on Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS), says women who smoke during pregnancy are four times more likely than non-smokers to see their child fall victim to cot death."

Personally, I find it very, very hard to understand why anybody smokes while knowingly pregnant. And yes, I know it's addictive. I speak as an ex-smoker, not somebody who has no idea what it's like to have a love affair with the evil weed.

No, I quit years ago, this is more me

SaintJude · 14/10/2007 23:30

too right blazing.

when I had to do a 24 hour urine collection (hoh yesh - its true - they make you do it with a jug and a funnel and a 2 litre bottle), the mw was extremely reluctant to give me 2 bottles because she only had 2 left.

So, she just gave me one. I argued and said I'd definitely need more than one. She said "okay, but you'll have to wait while I get one from off of the ward" WTF???????

Some mw are mental. It's from being around too many fragrant fanjos, I'm sure of it.

blazingsandals · 14/10/2007 23:31

I read in the Express today (I didn't bloody buy it okay?) an article by Anne Diamond who lost a baby to cot death and who reckoned that the back to sleep campaign was hugely successful in lowering the levels of SIDS.

I wonder what it is about that campaign that caught on so well though - was it the simplicity of the message or that it was something parents could actively do. We are constantly told what not to do, but few practical things we can do to maximises our children's chances of survival.

blazingsandals · 14/10/2007 23:32

Sorry Saint Jude I had three big flasks when I was on post cs urine collection so I probably nicked your second one!

blazingsandals · 14/10/2007 23:33

I imagine LLs children must be something like this

SaintJude · 14/10/2007 23:35

thunderbolts and lightening LL

The back to sleep campaign was promoted by schlebs.

it caught the attention of the media and was high on the schedules of morning/daytime tv.

SaintJude · 14/10/2007 23:36

awwww look at this the ickle hamster has no idea what's coming from the kitten, does he

AitchTwoOh · 14/10/2007 23:37

well, don't get Claire Verity in as a nanny, obviously. i don't really think anyone's made the 9 out of 10 mistake, madamez, by the way, but worked backwards it is interesting and probably owes much to (as pointed out by blazing and gomez) social inequality. but it's interesting all the same, and horrible to think that there will be women reading that today who have lost a child and will feel that proof positive of their culpability has just been demonstrated. particularly awful because it's avoidable, the smoking if not the cot death.

heavy · 14/10/2007 23:38

sorry, haven't read whole thread. strongly suspect that "9 out of 10 mothers whose babies suffered cot death smoked during pregnancy" will turn out to be utter rubbish. In the meantime those who have suffered immeasurably will no doubt be faced with accusing glances from the rest of us.

blazingsandals · 14/10/2007 23:39

Right so we need to get famous smokers to quit and past their bumps on the news.....

Actually might not be a bad plan. Smoking rates among teens are increasing at a scary rate (even if they can't legally buy fags till 18 now).

Which btw is a bloody stupid law. Everyone knows you buy onesies from the newsagent when you are underage and he's unlikely to care any more now than he did before the age limit was raised.

SaintJude · 14/10/2007 23:40

this is actually a pic of LL

Sorry for outing you LL.

blazingsandals · 14/10/2007 23:40

Saint Jude - I saw that and thought 'I wonder what I can make for the barbecue'

blazingsandals · 14/10/2007 23:42

The hamster obv (LL has legged it just in case).

littleNonSpecificHolidaylapin · 14/10/2007 23:42

ARRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH I don't BELIEVE I fell for it!!!!!

littleNonSpecificHolidaylapin · 14/10/2007 23:43

This is the real me anyway

Tortington · 14/10/2007 23:43

1)"why are you saying women should be jailed for eating sushi, other than to make some arsey point about civil liberties? "

2)"nah, you didn't custardo. there was no explanatory text, just a list of foods and a statement that women shoudl be jailed for eating them. arsey."

3)"what are you talking about? where's the vitriol? i said you made a point in an arsey way. you did. there was no discussion, no 'here's my point', just a list of foods and an exhortation that people should be jailed for eating sushi. i've no idea what you are talking about, i've seen no vitriol. unless you think 'arsey' is particularly vicious... hmm

Greensleeves · 14/10/2007 23:45

the real lapin

littleNonSpecificHolidaylapin · 14/10/2007 23:46

You need to learn to type faster if you're going to do that, Custy

littleNonSpecificHolidaylapin · 14/10/2007 23:48

Night, chicks!

SaintJude · 14/10/2007 23:48

That's how I imagined her greeny, but black.

AitchTwoOh · 14/10/2007 23:48

wow. you really are being Unbelievably Arsey, custy.

blazingsandals · 14/10/2007 23:48

Custy - did I say you were a witch? Where? Blimey?

blazingsandals · 14/10/2007 23:51

Ah the flying monkeys thing.....actually not directed at anyone in particular - Aitch is just as likely to have flying monkeys

It's not all about you custy - sorry.

ScaryScaryNight · 15/10/2007 00:03

Custy, I am sorry, but I did find your posts bizarre, I did not understand how you got from smoking and snorting cocaine in pregnancy to a list of "prohibited" foods with the conclusion about Jailing Sushi-eaters.

I am still bewildered at the turn this thread has taken between you and Aitch. You are both two very strong and prolific mumsnetters whom I hold in great esteem for opinions, outspokenness clarity of mind and eloquence.

I have finnished sorting out my christmas presents, and shall go to bed.

Custy, how many pregnant women do you think continue to eat/drink everything on your list deliberately when knowing the risks?

By custenstein on Sun 14-Oct-07 21:09:33
i dunno scary - but i think they should be JAILED for eating sushi

By AitchTwoOh on Sun 14-Oct-07 21:10:47
scary made a good point, though, no sense in ignoring it. if women ate all the foods on your list, custy, and smoked, drank and took drugs... would you conclude that she didn't wish the child to live?

By custenstein on Sun 14-Oct-07 21:13:32
what would my conclusion matter?

You see - all the above (coupled with your first post).....tells me that aitch wasnt being 'anything' with you.

Then she said

By AitchTwoOh on Sun 14-Oct-07 21:21:58
why are you saying women should be jailed for eating sushi, other than to make some arsey point about civil liberties? by and large, when informed that eating, say, blue cheese, increases your risk of listeria and therefore harm to the baby, most women don't take the risk. they don't say 'oooh, it's too hard for me not to eat blue cheese, i rely on it when i'm stressed'.

fair question.

You answered with

By custenstein on Sun 14-Oct-07 21:32:05
why is my point arsey - but your points aren't aitch? to seem to take extra special effort when replying to my posts to be mean.
If you have a point of discussion ( which you clearly do) why not just air it without the associated vitriol?

I cannot see ANYTHING in the above that purports to her taking "extra special effort when reply to my posts to be mean" or "vitriolic". To say that is an exaggeration of the issue, and seems as though you are picking a fight with her.

I mean - an extra special effort to be mean? Really? Please show me where....
