Too bloody right!

OP posts:
southeastastra · 12/10/2007 21:14

i have sympathy for the public speccie, but it's the nastiness of some posts on mumsnet that have made me sad. dp has worked for royal mail for years.

one post today said that her child sees posties as 'nasty' now. the amount of hate against postal workers has really saddened me, not just on here, on lots of sites.

it seems to be looked on a bad to stand up for your rights now. everyone just accepts that they have to do it, so should everyone else.

Piffle · 12/10/2007 21:15

no spoooky it has been delcared illegal they will still strike I expect

ScaryScaryNight · 12/10/2007 21:16

I like my postman very much. We have had the same for years, always nice and cheerful and happy. I would not give him grief because I dont get my post. That is a mere inconvenience in comparison....

All the bills I DONT HAVE TO pay yet as I cant post cheques....

WeeWitchyWilkie · 12/10/2007 21:20

A postie turned up at work with a Special D for me (work related) and I said 'Oh, I thought you were on strike?' (genuinely confused) and he got right on his high horse about how he couldn't afford it, he thought it was terrible they were being forced to strike etc etc. I explained I totally agreed with him not striking. It made me sad that he was so defensive.

beautifuldays · 12/10/2007 21:21

orangehead - no it's not fair, but it's the gov/bossses who are to blame for this situation, not the poor bloody posties

WotzyWhitchyWoo · 12/10/2007 21:26

southeastastra don't get upset. As on my other tthread it wasn't up for debate, just wanted other options for posting small items, and how small businesses are coping.

There a some MNers who work form home and who aren't on large incomes that are suffering too.

Ignore these posts

orangehead · 12/10/2007 21:29

beautifuldays - like I said alot of people have crap jobs, should we all go on strike?

southeastastra · 12/10/2007 21:29

i'm just amazed wotzy at how emotive this has become, the bbc site's comments are depressing

TheQueenOfQuotes · 12/10/2007 21:32

Speccie - I take it that you wouldn't go into work one day and suddenly be told "oh actually we're changing the hours you work, you're starting at a different time" or "sorry you're ill in hospital......we'll take the days you are off from your AL".......

Our posties are lovely - every fortnight DH gets his pile of visits from work delivered by Special Delivery (and sometimes on the alternate week his stationary gets delivered the same way). As it happens we are one of the first on the "walk" that he does or if it's someone else doing the special deliveries almost always first on the list. This means that invariably it turns up at around 7am.....which is 1hr earlier than we get up, and earlier than I would like DS3 to be woken up by the doorbell.

Anyhow, in the last month or so both of them have started coming to us later sometimes - we're still first on the list of deliveries but they both realised that we were being disturbed almost on a daily basis by them......and said that they would come back to us part way through their post/at the end . They don't do it every time - but it's lovely once in a while not to be disturbed by our regular delivery

EmsMum · 12/10/2007 21:33

I like my posties. They are nice cheerful guys, rain or shine.

But I also like the guy who runs our sub-post office cum village store, working all hours providing a vital service to the village, who is losing commission.

Someone mentioned the miners. Um... I'm old enough to remember the bad days of thatcher and scargill. With coal miners in my family history too, its in sorrow rather than anger that I have to say that strikes didn't exactly help. I only hope the Royal Mail doesn't go the way of the mining industry.

jofeb04 · 12/10/2007 21:33

I think it is a problem that they have made it illegal for the posties not to strike next week. What is going to happen with other future strikes.

TBH,I work from home, as as the RM stated, I didn't post anything whilst they were on stike... and I am awaiting cheques.

As I said on the other thread, I believe anyone should have the right to strike, otherwise fatcats get fatter, and the workers get less.

southeastastra · 12/10/2007 21:33

fgs it's just paper, put through letterboxes, some high, some low, lots guarded by dogs or set 100ft up in the sky.

they are sometimes the only person someone would see all day it's sad really. it's a service but everything has to make money these days

SaintJude · 12/10/2007 21:34

I understand their reasons for striking completely.

I'm still utterly pissed off that my post has been delayed for over a week and I really REALLY am relying on it atm.

The service in our area is not as good as it is in other areas either.....

jofeb04 · 12/10/2007 21:35

I also live in a coaling village, and many many people here fully support the posties.

My postie has delivered mail when the village has been snowed in (due to very steep hills) and no one has gone to work.

WotzyWhitchyWoo · 12/10/2007 21:35

I know, try and stay away that has anything with the word post in it for a few days.

Its tough all round. I have been sworn at today on the phone about delayed things and then 30 minutes later someone else offering to pay the courier delivery costs out of the blue. Completely threw me how reasonable he was.

southeastastra · 12/10/2007 21:40

i can't stay away wotzy i wish i could.

some comments on the web are viscious, nasty. it seems like everyone is saving up their hate for something and RM was in the firing line.

TheQueenOfQuotes · 12/10/2007 21:41

oh and obviously as DH works entirely from home (well he's out of the house for "work" - but all paperwork - of which there is a LOT infact it's all paperwork is sent here, and then sent out again) we rely heavily on the post.....but still support the strikes.

beautifuldays · 12/10/2007 21:58

it's not about having a "crap" job. it's about having your pension taken off you, or being descriminated against because of your age or gender. the changes that RM are trying to make will seriously affect the posties and their families and children. they didn't sign up for all that when they took the jobs.

if your employers are taking advantage of you, whatever job, i support people who stand up for themselves. your original comment was offensive, daily mail type abusive, and very un-empathetic.

orangehead · 12/10/2007 22:06

What was offensive?

saggers · 12/10/2007 22:25

My DP works for RM on permanent nightshift. When I had DD1 I went back to work part-time, so I could be with DD as much as possible. I now have 2 DDs and am still part time (a teacher). I work every afternoon. DP looked after DD1 (and now looks after DD2 and collects DD1 from school every afternoon while I am in work) We could only afford for me to work part-time because we don't have to pay for childcare, as we do it between us. Something which we value and treasure. The proposed 'modernisation' may well include a loss of all night shifts. Where would that leave us? Would my DP simply lose his job? Would he be expected to take a different shift? (leaving us with no childcare while I am at work, and forcing us to have to run two cars etc etc) It is for this reason that my DP has been on strike. (I have important documents which have not been delivered yet. DD2's birthday cards and presents will not arrive in time. A PITA, but I fully support the strike action.) The issue to the striking workforce is not the pay offer, but rather the proposed drastic changes in working conditions. To make matters worse, the 'men' at the top, time after time, award themselves six figure bonuses and POUR money away (remember the change from Royal Mail to Consignia and then back again?!) I rest my case. (And pray to God that DP can keep his nightshift)

beautifuldays · 12/10/2007 22:30

sorry i didn't make myself clear. the first sentance was a response to your question, it was speccieseccie who was being rather offensive.

SpeccieSeccie · 13/10/2007 10:14

Apologies about the original wankers comment.

Tis the morning and I woke up feeling less strident and sorry that I said that. I see from headlines that it seems to have been resolved so, I hope, that's good.
