"When Gina Ford is the liberal voice in a debate you do begin to wonder what's going on," says childcare historian, Hugh Cunningham. "

Seems to me worth mentioning that the ones to whom this Truby King method "did no harm" are, amongst other things, those who actually survived the "ordeal" given the higher cot death numbers (I presume) before more recent research shed light on such things.

Nothing wrong with fresh air if the mother is so inclined and weather suits (and baby is dressed for it). The problem for me is that the twins' mum very obviously was not keen but, in this as in much else, was being encouraged to listen to the rules and not to her own instincts.

I used to work with a guy who was hit as a form of punishment. He would also be sent out to the field to choose the stick just for that added bonus. 'Never did me any harm' he would say.

The same guy one night got into a fight with a bus stop. I kid you not. A more fucked up guy I have never met.

One should always be wary of people who say 'it never did me any harm....'
