Daisy Goodwin: Mumsnetters are "the self-righteous childcare fundamentalists of the internet."

You'll like this one.

Daisy Goodwin writes in the Times :

"As one Mumsnet post puts it: ?Watching Claire Verity abuse other people?s babies in the name of ?routine? makes my blood boil. She should be prosecuted under child protection laws, it?s disgusting.? As responsible programme-makers we observed due diligence on this for Bringing Up Baby and there is absolutely no scientific evidence that following a routine in infancy has any deleterious effect on the psychological health of the child... But this is heresy to the self-right-eous childcare fundamentalists of the internet who loathe Verity so much that she has been spat at in the street and received death threats."

oh my god....
my head may explode if i have to start viewing gf as friend and ally......

hunkermunker · 07/10/2007 22:53

And yet the babies are being weaned at 11 weeks or so in the last prog...

Bewilderbeast · 07/10/2007 22:53

I'd rather be a self righteous childcare fundamentalist than an unfeeling bitch who thinks that babies are manipulative, shouldn't be cuddled or given affection and are left to scream alone for ages on their first night home from hospital, or any night for that matter. I think Ms Goodwin has deliberately mis-represented the criticism, I don't think it's the routine or the idea of a routine that's the problem as such but the completely inhumane way that it was enforced. I wouldn't treat my dog like that never mind my child.

hunkermunker · 07/10/2007 22:54

There's a cynical side to me that thinks that if I was GF, I'd be trying to win back my "core voters" as well...

As for Daisy - I heap scorn and loathing in her general direction.

hunkermunker · 07/10/2007 22:55

Bewliderbeast, the heartbreakingly ironic thing is that Claire Verity DOESN'T treat her dogs like that - they're spoilt pampered pooches by all accounts. She seemed to think more of the foxes than the babies, after all!

controlfreaky2 · 07/10/2007 22:59

on net weeks programme i've heard the foxes are in the pram and the tins left on a railway embankment.....

controlfreaky2 · 07/10/2007 22:59

TWINS obviously

witchandchips · 07/10/2007 23:00

hunker i don't think GFs motives on this are particularly important. I think she wishes to place herself on the other side of the line to CV.

hunkermunker · 07/10/2007 23:03

I think GF has learnt from her experiences - her new book is "softer" in its approach than the original and her site makes allowances for the latest research into eg SIDS.

But from things I read about her at the time of the debacle on here, from people who'd been "helped" by her, I am still suspicious, shall we say.

But it's not about her, it's about CV.

controlfreaky2 · 07/10/2007 23:05

do you think we should warn cv to cross gf at her peril??.....
nah, why would we?!

What gets me is the tone of the websites.
They are breathily sychophantic and hysterical in manner of Bible belt TV evangelists.

'It's true!" Yes,for only $$$$$$40000000, Ms X will squeeze a blackhead on your nose and for the extra sum of $$$$$$600000000 will even grind your toes into the dust.

What has it come to when vulnerable women pay money making outfits for advice that used to be shared freely and generously between women?

It is fucking nuts.

controlfreaky2 · 07/10/2007 23:10

and no better are the people making even more money by turning it into "entertainment"

moondog · 07/10/2007 23:12

Yes
Reminds me once agian why I gave up tv a long time ago.
Grossly immoral, messing with people's lives at their most vulnerable and needy time.

'CV is like GF on cocaine.' PMSL MP.
but don't know whether to laugh or cry at the idea of her pampered pooches never having to go through what she enforces upon other people's children.

Daisy Goodwin is disingenuous and slippery in the extreme.

Mercy · 08/10/2007 17:21

I've only read the thread title and I'm lol.

Even my mum (late 60s) is taken aback by CV's methods, by the whole programme in fact, which she thinks is misleading.

Right, will read the link and thread.

blazingsandals · 08/10/2007 17:32

Oh yeah, I'm definitely a self-righteous childcare fundamentalist! Watch my drive by froot shooting!

Nightynight · 15/10/2007 22:15

Daisy Goodwin - never heard of you, but please note that, we don't just exist on the internet. We are real parents.

Childcare fundamentalists? well yes, we are quite keen on the fundamentals of childcare, like loving children.

morningpaper · 04/06/2009 20:44

I remember when she called us "http://women.timesonline.co.uk/tol/life_and_style/women/families/article2602620.ece "The self-righteous childcare fundamentalists of the internet"]]
