Has anyone seen this on the news? The most shocking thing I’ve seen since 9/11! So sad 😢

OP posts:
Cocolapew · 04/08/2020 19:34

I saw a couple of videos on Twitter it really is shocking

MistyMinge2 · 04/08/2020 19:34

I've just seen it. Absolutely horrific. The damage looks immense, must have been a huge bomb. Those poor poor people.

ureterr1blemuriel · 04/08/2020 19:36

There’s some reports that the chemical that caused it is toxic and now in the air which everyone is breathing in.

It must have seriously hurt thousands of people. I just can’t believe it.

I hope our government is making plans to help already.

The narrative on tv is that it was a cache of fireworks. REALLY!?!

eurochick · 04/08/2020 19:43

I saw reports saying highly explosive materials were stored there. It's awful.

kerfuffling · 04/08/2020 19:47

I just watched the clips on the BBC. It is horrifying.

paellaandpies · 04/08/2020 19:48

People are saying the government had been storing ammonium nitrate in a warehouse there for months. Time will tell what the days was, I guess.

We can only hope it’s not as bad as it looks, but it looks so bloody awful. As if the people in Lebanon didn’t have enough difficulties at the moment Sad

I would expect that to be propane, LPG or natural gas storage that BLEVE'd... It gets to certain stage due to fire... Tries to release pressure causing fire to jet out and then goes just like this..always a truly spectacular explosion even if pretty small quantity... All goes around it.. spectacular blast wave...

The red cloud is unexpected & worrying though...

I dread to think how many died and injured.... Truly awful... And so terribly sad....

littleducks · 04/08/2020 19:54

Honestly I read "most shocking thing since 9/11" and was Hmm thinking a bit hyperbole. Then I watched video and that is exactly it.

VaggieMight · 04/08/2020 20:11

It looks like the site of a nuclear bomb blast. The scenes are horrifying, so sad, those poor people.

Mummylin · 04/08/2020 22:17

It is the most shocking thing I have seen since the twin towers . Those poor people , I cannot imagine all the horror, pain and grief they will go through. Hopefully they will get lots of help, they can sure do with it.

StealthPolarBear · 05/08/2020 06:58

They are still going through the rubble, I can't imagine what the death toll will be. Awful.

MythicalBiologicalFennel · 05/08/2020 07:07

It reminds me of the AZF explosion in Toulouse. Poor people Sad

LucyLocketsPocket · 05/08/2020 07:10

I read it was ammonium nitrate that had been stored there for six years without proper safety checks.

Apparently this can be used for fertilising and is highly explosive.

Truly horrendous blast.

LucyLocketsPocket · 05/08/2020 07:11

Oh and it was 2,750 tonnes of it!!

JacobReesMogadishu · 05/08/2020 07:15

News is saying the force was a fifth of the force of the atomic bomb dropped on Japan....not Hiroshima, the other one I think.

It looked like a nuclear bomb with that mushroom cloud and the aftermath looks like a Film set of a nuclear war zone.

2700 tonnes of highly explosive material! Devastating.

MsTSwift · 05/08/2020 07:16

Was it an accident?

LucyLocketsPocket · 05/08/2020 07:17

@MsTSwift

Was it an accident?
That's what is currently being reported.
wowfudge · 05/08/2020 08:37

There was a fire before it went up. The most shocking thing I've seen since 9/11. The shockwave was huge and shown from 3 different angles. I heard about it whilst I was working, but when I saw the footage on last night's news it made me cry. The devastation is enormous and so many people have been killed and injured.

AlternativePerspective · 05/08/2020 08:41

Horrific.

But what i don’t understand is why anyone would want to watch videos of it on twitter.

On the news is one thing, actively watching people’s home-made videos on social media is really quite horrible.

PerkingFaintly · 05/08/2020 08:44

The death toll is going to be unspeakable.

And that's just the direct toll. The port is said to basically no longer exist, and the explosion destroyed the grain silos there. Lebanon was already on the verge of food insecurity. What can they possibly do now?

www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-middle-east-53659282

It's all godawful.

wowfudge · 05/08/2020 08:46

Alternative you don't think it's in order to get a fuller appreciation of what happened and the effects people there have suffered?

Pluckedpencil · 05/08/2020 13:15

Oh god the images are horrific. And worse still, all countries are so obsessed with their own problems right now, I doubt they'll be given aid. The pictures are so sad. Young, normal men and women totally harmed like that in the middle of the day. No port in a place where nearly all food is imported. It's tragic.

JaJaDingDong · 05/08/2020 16:53

But what i don’t understand is why anyone would want to watch videos of it on twitter.

Because the horror is fascinating in a weird way. I remember watching videos of the two recent Tsunsmis and the twin towers many times.
It's like it's beyond belief.
