Public sector pay rises

Shocked that anyone can have a pay rise in this climate but even more shocked that nurses have not been included. There will be the inevitable teacher bashing from those who don’t stop to wonder how schools will afford this pay rise. Expect a rise in redundancies in education before long and lots of people complaining that pay rises are unfair. Aren’t they always?

Why haven't nurses been included?

Schools won't be able to afford it as there is no extra budget to do it. The staffing budget in schools is enormous as it is, if the government want teachers to have a pay rise then they need to fund it. Regardless of whether teachers deserve it or not it's ridiculous for the government to announce these things without providing the funds.

I'm more shocked that in 11 years my salary has only risen 1.5% so no, I'm not shocked, I'm relieved. HTH

And for all the frothing about teachers' pay rises, there are so many this won't apply to anyway, whether schools can afford it or not. DP and I had a good laugh about it this morning - he teaches in a prep school and I'm in FE.

I can't speak for other sectors, but I can't see this happening in education. Especially when schools have been given no extra money to help them reopen safely for things like extra cleaning.

Nurses are partway through a long term pay deal.

People will think the government is funding teacher pay rises. It will come out of school budgets if it's paid at all. Expect redundancies and increased numbers of teachers managed out.

The school one is unfunded. It's got to come out of existing budgets.

This announcement is just smoke and mirrors to turn the public against public sector workers in order to hide the fact they managed to vote down an amendment that would protect the NHS in any future trade deals.

Judging by how hysterical some posters on MN get about teachers and the public sector it will probably work as well.
