Statues: a look at the common attributes

Hello everyone

This thread isn't about whether the statues should be removed, saved, explained, or whatever. I would like to look at:

(1) the common attributes of the current statues across the UK
(2) what statues would we like now?

I'll start with some initial comments I've thought of so far:

1) Common attributes of the current statues:

A) Human being
B) White skin
C) Had a penis

Also many:

D) Did some good, but also did things we now find offensive and completely unacceptable even totally disgusting.

  1. I would personally like to see statues included with some of these attributes: (NOT in any particular order of importance):

A) Not only human beings but other life forms such as dogs (eg assistance dogs, loved companion dogs, other) wild animals, birds, etc Also botanical, objects eg medical equipment, interesting inventions, works of art

B) When the statue is of a human being: different ethnicities, skin colours, religions, language speakers etc

C) Women

What do you think?

Sure I've seen London statues of Victoria, Boadicea, Gandhi, Florence Nightingale, Pankhurst, Cavell, Booth, Louisa Blake, Pavlova, Seacole, Woolf, Violet Szabo, and Mandela.

Perhaps the ones of the terrorists should come down.
Florence Nightingale was apparently racist rejecting Mary Seacole.

A statue commemorates in some way persons of importance to the people outing them up. The UK in general over the last 1000 years those people have been white and male.

I worry about current attitudes that will leave us with no icons. No one will do or say or write anything that will be capable of offending anyone else until the end of time. You will not be allowed an opinion that is not officially sanctioned.

Welcome to 1984.

Hi

Thanks for your reply!

I didn't really want to discuss whether the statues should or shouldn't be removed. There are plenty of discussions about that already.

What I wanted was more to look forward and think what statues do we all want?

If I could choose a current icon, I'd choose JK Rowling for (as somebody else on here penned) having ovaries of titanium and for having more talent in her little finger than Redmayne, Radcliffe and Watson and Grint combined.

But she'd hate that.

Oh yes, she would be great!

Totally agree - JK Rowling is so talented, insightful, intelligent, sensitive and a wonderful role model. I love her critical thinking skills and integrity to speak out and not be bullied into submission by people who are mostly male bodied.

I’d like to see a Bob the cat statue.

It might have been easier if you’d just asked that:

JUST asked that.

(Not also talked nonsense about SLL statues having penises and white skin.)

ArriettyJones · 17/06/2020 18:34

ALL not SLL.

JayAlfredPrufrock · 17/06/2020 18:37

I’m not sure I need statues really.

In your opinion nonsense, obviously not in my opinion. We are allowed different opinions you know Wink

I think it's an art form and being outside a lot of people can enjoy them for free.

But no, we don't need them. We don't need art, we don't need music. They enrich our lives though.

@ArriettyJones

ALL not SLL.
I said "common attributes". That doesn't mean "ALL"
