Have just seen this. Is it just me that finds this disturbing?

8 is a bit yourn I guess

and that fact teat it is for our entertainment is bollox

expatinscotland · 19/09/2007 15:37

No.

That's whacked.

Soph73 · 19/09/2007 15:40

And why on earth would you leave bleach in an unmarked bottle. A lot of youngsters aren't going to smell the contents before drinking it. Where were the child psychologists, etc then?

sounds like one to avoid imo

2shoes · 19/09/2007 17:26

I wonder why parents would put their kids up for it

tazmosis · 19/09/2007 21:31

Bloody hell - that is scraping the reality TV barrel. Can you imagine how kids feel being voted for and not winning!

munz · 19/09/2007 21:40

seriously is getting your kid on the telly that important to them???

RosaLuxembourg · 19/09/2007 21:45

Lord of the Flies revisited?

lilolilmanchester · 19/09/2007 22:04

Have I missed something here? Presumably they are filming it, so won't there be camera crews at least? Even if hidden cameras, I assume there will be a production team watching what's happening?

lilolilmanchester · 19/09/2007 22:04

P.S. if not, agree, outrageous

TheArmadillo · 19/09/2007 22:13

I couldn't imagine putting my child up for that.

Lord of the Flies didn't go well - have they not read it.

Bad bad idea - dangerous as well.

BBC were running it and there's another thread on it. BBC article said how they moved it all to New Mexico as the laws were less stringent.

[http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/7002065.stm]] honestly I think it is disgusting. I don;t care how many people they have watching the cameras.

Leaving kids for a month or more on their own to cope for TV????

Even at a health level - what about hygiene adn the risk of getting food poisoning or something similar from dirty conditions. Kids aren't taht good at cleaning or knowing what has to be done for the sake of their health.

Even before you get onto the emotional stuff.

TheArmadillo · 19/09/2007 22:15

try again

lilolilmanchester · 19/09/2007 22:19

yeah, you're right. Scrub my first post, stick with the second = outrageous.

twinsetandpearls · 19/09/2007 22:20

I was watching this on the news this morning with dd and she said while jumping with excitment "can we go there"

But seriously no.

TheArmadillo · 19/09/2007 22:20

and even if they are being watched 24/7 by all manner of 'experts' you are still leaving children as young as 8 to fend for themselves and make descisions, for themselves and others. For 40 days they are in charge of their lives completely and have noone to take care of them. That is a long time. THey may have food and stuff provided but that isn't the same.

IT's an awful lot of pressure to take, parents are supposed to take care of their children and to like after them so they don't have to do it themselves.

I find it absolutely appalling and I cna't believe any parent would let their child do this.

TheArmadillo · 19/09/2007 22:25

Imagine it was someone who left hteir 8,9 and 10 yo DCs alone in the house - with food and supplies to go on holiday for 40 days with a neighbour checking on them every so often. There would be a complete uproar and rightly so.

This isn't better just cos it's on telly.

And I wouldn't call anyone participating in it an 'expert' if they couldn't see anything wrong with it.

DIdn't they do something in UK with boys in a house for a couple of days without adults? I don't think it went well even in a short space of time IIRC.

slim22 · 20/09/2007 02:03

sick

islandofsodor · 20/09/2007 10:28

Whew!

Well at least it couldn't happen here. For children to take part in any filming like this they have to hold a licence from the education welfare officer and one chaperone per every 12 children have to be in attendance at all times. If the chaperone sees anything at all they consider to be dangerous or inappropriate they pull the plug, no messing.

LaBoheme · 20/09/2007 14:00

they did a similar thing for TV here with slightly younger children in a big house. When they started to feel like they wanted to leave they would go to a door and ring the bell and get sent home. It was tough viewing, lots of bullying. I remember they made spagetti bolognese and Iwas worried they hadn't cooked it enough and would get ill

TheArmadillo · 20/09/2007 14:28

yeah I remember that one - one kid's parents pulled him out IIRC (parents were watching constantly) cos of bullying.

I don't think any of the kdis enjoyed it and it wasn't anywhere near as long as 40 days.

Maybe instead of handing out ASBO's they should send all delinquents to places like this.
Worse than prison!
