Excellent posts Harpi - and if that's you being tired and ineloquent I would pay good money to see you at your best!

Disagree WW.

WinkyWinkola · 18/09/2007 17:10

You seriously think that the Daily Mail and The Sun readers of the UK would like to see paedophiles rehabilitated and that they would trust them after treatment. I don't think so!

bossybritches · 18/09/2007 17:23

I applaud the christian sentiments behind trying to re-hab them & certainly agree that while society castigates them we have no hope of improving their behaviour. However I question whether they are re-hab-able. (I think I just made up a new word there but you get my drift) If a paed likes kiddies then that's his/her natural, instinctive if you like, persuasion. Ones sexual preference can't be changed, that's your nature, the overwhelming difference between paeds and most of the rest of us being the level of control one has over ones instincts when such destruction and misery enuses.

I would say yes try and re-hab the poor sods who feel they have an increasing attraction to paedophilia, realise it's wrong and want help before they offend,to try & change themselves. That's a different kettle of fish to the persistant offenders who arrogantly assume there is nothing wrong with themselves (like CL) and that the only reason they are in jail is they got caught, not that they were doing anything wrong.

I'm not trying to condemn ALL these offenders (only MVHO after all) just pointing out a different angle!

unknownrebelbang · 18/09/2007 19:35

As Pan has already stated though, with the length of this sentence, he will be released into the community, without any licence conditions, so whether or not he rehab would work is irrelevant - he'll be under no obligation anyway.

And I very much doubt that he'll do undergo any programme in prison with less than 4 months to serve (he'd already served 43 days)

All the daily mail AND sun readers? I think you are being very stereotypical Winky.

It's not a "christian sentiment" at all bossy. I'm not christian, for a start

Bubble99 · 18/09/2007 23:14

He is till denying that he is a paedophile though, isn't he?

His solicitor read a statement to that effect.

harpsichordcarrier · 18/09/2007 23:24

nothing to do with being a Christian on my part. it is to do with being human and having a little compassion and also to do with being practical and pragmatic.
not much point in throwing up our hands and going urgh aren't paedophiles horrible people? what's to be done.

Pan · 18/09/2007 23:46

Ditto what Harpsi says about being pragmatic, and great posts too from last night.

There are other steps that the court may have been able to take, though I don't know if it did.

He will be on the Sex Offenders Register, requiring him to report any change in living circumstances, and he will be visited albeit on an infrequent basis by a local police Sex Offender Management Unit.

Also, the courts can/may have made a Sex Offender Prevention Order ( SOPO), which would specify things he cannot do. In this case it may be a ban on him having possession of a computer, or accessing the internet for a defined period.

If the court are making such a light disposal of these offences, it could have at least backed it up with a v. restrictive SOPO. No idea if it did though, but given we have not heard of this, it probably didn't.

tiredemma · 22/09/2007 14:56

its no fun being banged up

squeakybrushes · 22/09/2007 15:15
