Ladies, I am shocked that nobody picked this item of news in the midst of an ocean of vomit yesterday.

She created Body shop and promoted ethical capitalism before everybody else.
She sold her company a couple of years ago and had since devoted all her time and money to charities promoting her ethos and educating others.

Very sad day for feminism.

she did sell out to L'Oreal though. Who are funded by Nestle. And who test on animals. So IMO not really a great loss to feminism or any of the other causes she claimed to support, although of course my thoughts are with her family at this difficult time.

I think she's a national treasure. Don't blame her for selling to L'Oreal and taking the money. I think she broke enough new ground, and raised the bar for other consumer friendly companies. She rocked.

hmm - i know what you're saying, and i can't blame her for taking the money - but i do think that if she really believed in everything she claimed to believe in, she wouldn't have sold out.

no probs with the L'oReal sale imo no conflict of intersts at all

Anita Roddick was a shrewd business woman, in a time when business women were not the norm, so for that I respect her, but I do think she sold out for one reason and one reason only: money. Of course, that's what a shrewd business woman does. But true to her ideals she was not.

anyway, as i said earlier, my thoughts are with her family at this time. a death in the family is always tragic.

maybe she was just tired, UD? we'll never know. she's had hepatitis since 1971, that can drain you. i think her record is absolutely admirable.

I read somewhere that since last year (i.e. since she sold the Body Shop) she'd given about 30 million pounds to causes she supports. She is quoted as saying she didn't want to die rich. I agree the sale to L'Oreal was a tough one to fathom but I think as a company who specialises in brand building and managing they were well-placed to retain the Body Shop brand and ethos intact rather than asset-strip and then absorb into their own massive corporation. I'm not seeking to justify the sale, just offering a possible explanation.

UD for your info, the main reason she sold was she was ill and ggetting tired and she wanted to move on and use the cash for smthg more usefull.
sad she could not do it as planed.
