US Pres and VP debates

Hope it's ok if I start a new topic on this... the old one is getting a bit long.

Wanted to give my views on the debate after I watched it. I agree with KATG that I can now see how you can like Cheney if you agree with him. The VP debate was interesting (in a dull way, iykwim..) in that both the guys presented their views on the questions and both sounded like they knew about and believed what they were saying. I was taken startled to find myself really respecting Cheney's responses on the gay marriage issue.

Am looking forward to the pres debate on Fri.

Uliwa, my husband got his Chicago absentee ballot today. He's been sent two ballots (one Fed write in, one Cook county) and I've received none! Argh. Anyway -- I laughed when I read your "Chicago is Democrat" (under)statement. Yep, Chicago is Democrat like the Atlantic has some water in it.

Having fun talking to you guys.

Ah, so your hubby is from Chicago? Me too.

JJ · 06/10/2004 15:38

He lived there a while (orig from NW IN) and then we lived there together for 6 years (I'm from Indpls)! We lived in Lincoln Square (Ravenswood) and loved it. Where did you live?

Morning all--wow the other thread sure took a change of tone whilst I was sleeping. Watched some more debate blurbs this AM, and hate to say it, but glad I worked out instead.

JoolsToo · 06/10/2004 15:43

I believe the Windy City is mighty pretty?

Uwila · 06/10/2004 16:00

Oh yes, I'd like to go home for Thanksgiving and some shopping on the magnificent mile. But, I can't... sniff sniff...

Grew up in Hinsdale (a snobby little burb to the west). Now my parents are divornced and us four kids are scattered around. My mom and two sisters live in the city. My dad is out in farm country (Plainfield). As are my brother's wife and kids.

Uwila- glad to see you posting. Do I get to count as a Republican, even if I tend to be quite a liberal one? Hope you find a wonderful Thanksgiving dinner. Quite jealous about your being from Chicago, as that is one of the places I really want to go, but haven't been yet.

Uwila · 06/10/2004 16:10

Go in summer!!

brrrrrrrr....

Uwila · 06/10/2004 16:11

Can't say I would have pegged you for a Republican... what typically republican views do you hold?

colinsmommy · 06/10/2004 16:37

Sorry, put the baby down for his am nap, and its the only chance I have to take a shower. I really dont seem like one, do I. The truth is, neither party really "fits" me very well, but I hate to be an independent or whatever and not have my chance to vote in the primary. I chose to be a republican when I first registered to vote, because of the origins of the party, limiting the size and powers of the federal government. I am from the state of Oregon who over a decade ago implemented the supposedly revolutionary Oregon Health Plan crafted by Democrats, and is a complete and utter mess in almost every way possilble, generating more financial waste than before. But I've voted Republican, Democrat, Libertarian (tbh, they kind of scare me, I was just "throwing away" my vote, and Green Party(voted for Nader in 2000, can't stand Bush or Gore)

I'm all for family values, and am probably more conservative than you think in that area, but coming from a strict, highly religious family who decided to have nothing to do with me because of my choice of (a non-religous)husband, I despise the idea of telling people who you can and who you can't marry. I know that at least I couldn't help who I fell in love with. I think that the abuse, affairs, and general lack of love going on today in some marriages is more of a threat to the institution than the percieved "harm" of gay marriage.

Hope I didn't bore you.

Hi everybody! I was working like a maniac the last day or so and missed all the fireworks on the other thread.

I will admit to being raised as a Republican (actually voted for Reagan and Bush I) then realized that on many issues the Democratic platform was much more my style. I will readily admit that Cheney gave Edwards a run for his money at the debate. But, I would still much rather have Edwards on my side. He may not have the political history that Cheney has, but then again... he doesn't have the potlitical history that Cheney has.

JJ · 07/10/2004 06:21

jabberwocky, that's how I feel, too.

As long as we're telling a bit about ourselves...

I'm a states' rights liberal (as a friend calls me). I think the states should have more power to implement federally mandated and funded programs as they see fit. The liberal voice in me says that there should be more social safety nets, but they should be run on a state level, not a federal level (although they should be federally funded and overseen). I cannot imagine something like the NHS working at all in the US.

Anyway... time for my son to get up!

OP posts:
Uwila · 07/10/2004 08:11

Hiya, what do you mean by more social safety nets?

JJ · 08/10/2004 09:27

Uwila, I mean more subsidized housing, food vouchers, a better Medicare and Medicaid -- those sorts of things.

I have to apologize, but must bow out for a bit. Nothing political or personal, but we're moving out of here on Tues, spending 2 weeks in the US and moving to London after that. VV hectic. Today's my son's last day of school, the babysitter's last day (she's part of our family now), my husband's last day of work and my in-laws are arriving this afternoon (to help - and they will be help!). Anyway, I'm functioning (barely) somewhere past overload........

Hope to watch the debate tonight or replay tomorrow, though!
