It was a bad judgement, that's all

southeastastra · 11/09/2007 16:51

so basically the owner got 8 weeks for having a dangerous dog and everyone thinks that's acceptable?

and they'll be others.

No Southeast, I completely agree with you. I feel so sorry for the little girl, both because of her horrendous death and the fact that she was unlucky to have been born into such an awful family but I feel no sympathy for the relatives. They had an illegal dog and the grandmother was off her head on drink and drugs when 'looking after' her grandaughter. In court it was revealed that the dog had already bitten Ellie's aunt and that neighbours had complained about the dog being off the lead in the street. Would people be saying that the grandmother had suffered enough if some other unrelated child outside had been killed instead?

Elizabetth · 11/09/2007 17:07

I'm with the judge in asking why the dog's owner, the little girl's uncle, wasn't also prosecuted for manslaughter.

As far as I understand the grandmother wasn't responsible for the dog. I take it that it wasn't her who was walking the dog off the lead in the street or taunting it as I heard was shown in one video.

The grandmother being prosecuted gives the green light for people who own dangerous dogs to take no responsibility for them and blame whoever they left them with if something does happen.

clumsymum · 11/09/2007 17:46

I take it the law is ignoring the fact that this woman was under the influence of illegal substances.

No further prosecution then regarding possession of cannabis.

IMO the alcohol and cannabis will have 'clouded her judgement' regarding letting the dog in at all, and made her utterly incapable of dealing with what happened. If she hadn't been drugged up, maybe the child would have survived.

binkleandflip · 11/09/2007 17:54

Why do people think its ok to be stoned and drunk/drinking in charge of children?

Agree the child may have had a better chance had grandma's senses and reflex's been a bit sharper. The poor little mite had no chance at all. sickening.

clumsymum · 12/09/2007 11:13

Some years azgo, I was forced to socialise (work related) with people who were cannabis users.
I wouldn't have left them in change of a hamster after just a couple of joints, never mind 'caring' for a child after 10!
