Do you think we will have a firmer lock down in the UK?
Like Italy as people are not taking this seriously.

I'm hoping there is a time and distance limit specified for the exercise.

My in-laws have been out with their dog for 2/3 hours a day. A friend of mine has been walking around for six hours today and having "socially distanced" Prosecco in the park with a neighbour.

Pointless even mentioning it to them how reckless they've been. I get it. It's frustrating, we have been quarantined for 10 days now and have 4 days left until we go outside. I'm desperate to stretch my legs properly but also don't want to be a part of the spread.

StirCrazed · 26/03/2020 23:01

What's the longest you would tolerate living like that? Curious really. A year? Six months? Three months?
We can have the army in to enforce it, but as the economy totally falls apart there will be an end to lockdown. I am curious to know what you think your limits are? (Maybe it's even more than a year?)

SoleBizzz · 26/03/2020 23:02

Just put rubbish out and neighbour dropped home by her friend whom doesn't live with her. All bs. They don't care.

Scruffyoak · 26/03/2020 23:03

My limit is less than a year. I guess we would have too but honestly I would struggle.

farfallarocks · 26/03/2020 23:10

The effect of a lockdown is not neutral. It has devastating effects on vulnerable, abused and deprived populations. Personally I think the elderly and vulnerable should shelter and everyone else including school kids should be able to go about freely. Closing school will result in deaths that will never be recorded as a result of Covid 19.

Reginabambina · 26/03/2020 23:10

The thing that people have to remember is that the point of lockdown isn’t lockdown. The government doesn’t want everyone to stay in their homes, Boris Johnson doesn’t give a shit how or where you exercise, all that matters from a policy point of view is flattening the curve. While the current conditions aren’t going to achieve complete social isolation that’s besides the point. The point is that the government wants to ensure that the NHS can withstand the epidemic with minimal disruption to the economy and to civil liberties. In three weeks time they will look at hospitalisation rates and Male a decision on that basis whether to tighten, maintain or, relax current conditions. A lot of people on mn seem to ge under the misapprehension that we’re supposed to be preventing the spread of Coronavirus, that’s not what this is. This is about drawing out the spread so that it occurs over a longer period of time.

Hercwasonaroll · 26/03/2020 23:43

I agree farfall.

The "unintended" consequences of a lockdown shouldn't be underestimated.

Mental health issues, abuse, neglect, murder, starvation, loneliness are all problems society will face long after coronavirus is gone. Many deaths won't be directly linked to covid 19 but the conditions we now live in will lead to them.

Never mind the ever widening disadvantage gap while the schools are closed.

Aderyn19 · 27/03/2020 08:43

I don't think enough people are respecting the lockdown. Too many people still socialising with their neighbours. Fucker in front of me in queue for supermarket has a hacking cough. Should be at home. He's with his wife and I doubt it takes two of them to shop!

cdtaylornats · 28/03/2020 09:53

Your SIL can't ignore her horse - they need to be attended to twice a day.

lottieloop · 28/03/2020 10:26

My friends live in Cyprus.

You are forbidden to leave your house unless you have prior consent - you have to text the government ( dedicated text line ) with reason why you have to leave your house. You are given a couple of essential reasons like : medication, essential shop etc etc & you can't leave until you are given permission, police on ground / roads enforcing this.

TheGirlFromStoryville · 28/03/2020 10:36

I'm quite happy on lockdown - I feel quite safe in the house. All shopping now is online only for us - I started prepping for Brexit and its carried on from there.

Far too many are stretching the rules for their own selfish reasons.

StirCrazed · 28/03/2020 10:39

Yes, some countries have more experience of martial law than others.

marblesgoing · 28/03/2020 10:52

We've got no choice but to go to do a food shop 😳
We really don't want to but we've held off as long as we can and are going on Monday.
Can't get a click and collect or delivery slot with any supermarket here full stop so no choice but if I could I wouldn't even be doing that

Yamihere · 28/03/2020 10:56

I couldn't last a year like this. Its only been 5 days and I'm so pissed off. I am following the rules and will continue to do so but I wouldn't live like this long term. I value the quality of my life over quantity. And the quality sucks big time right now. Can't work, can't go hillwalking, cant go camping, can't see loved ones.
I try to remain positive and look at what I can do. So my house is already spotless, I've prepared homecooked meals, phoned people, trained my dog, am doing online course, and reading books. But normally I spend a lot more time outdoors than in, I didn't realise how much mental health that gave me til now.
A firmer lockdown can fuck right off!

Scruffyoak · 28/03/2020 12:29

I can if we can use garden...if that right goes I will struggle.

Parker231 · 28/03/2020 14:02

If people don’t respect the new regulations and if the number of deaths can’t be controlled, the regulations will be tightened up and go on for longer.

I’d make them tougher as I’d like my doctor DH to survive and not get infected by idiots thinking the regulations don’t apply to them.

StirCrazed · 28/03/2020 14:46

Yes it would have been great if we'd had a strict lockdown plus track and trace about a month if not more ago. But we didn't. So most of us are going to catch this and one in ten of us are going to need hospitalising, with a fairly high proportion of them needing ventilators. That's the nature of this virus. Lockdown isn't going to change that, just make it go on over a longer period and leave the country bankrupt. No money for healthcare then either.

mommymooo · 28/03/2020 14:59

It's not getting taken seriously at all by me. I live by a park and it's full of kids and teenagers all together sound what they do then going home to their families.
I walked to the shop the other day and they were all playing spin the bottle ( one of my old favourites) now if that's not spreading saliva I don't know what is.

TeacupDrama · 28/03/2020 15:06

there is no place where you can't use your private garden
Ok so many people don't have them ie people in flats etc but there has not been a ban on using your own property anywhere; there maybe a ban on using communal gardens but not completely private ones

Dougt · 28/03/2020 15:26

I agree with a ReginaBambina. The government are fully aware that people won’t all follow “the rules“ and will have taken into account things like all the self employed labourers still getting into packed tube trains etc. The idea is not to prevent all transmission it is to minimise it is the NHS can just about still manage.

To be honest I think we are doing bloody well. Yes I’m annoyed when couples walk two abreast across a pavement whilst a I step into the road. But I can see the vast majority of people are trying. The parks are busier where I am because people are staying local. The buses are empty. A huge number of people are working from home.
We have changed society DRAMATICALLY since what, not even two weeks ago.

StirCrazed · 28/03/2020 15:30

Certainly trying harder than Boris, that's for sure

PlywoodPlank · 28/03/2020 15:40

Yes. The looser the lockdown, the longer it will last.

notrub · 18/04/2020 15:33

People are no doubt using the exercise rule to get out the house, but so what? Unless they're going to someone else's house, or holding a massive street party, they're not going to infect anyone.

There's an awful lot of VERY non-essential business going on that would need to be shut down first.
e.g. The 2000 people working at the Passport office - I mean what on earth is that doing open when nobody is going to need a new passport for quite a while!

BooseysMom · 18/04/2020 16:04

This is an interesting suggestion. I think there's validity in this..what do others think?

I shopped at Waitrose recently and was appalled at the few older women who almost pushed others aside to get to the veg! Zero consideration for the 2 metre rule! In the end the security guy had to shout for people to respect the 2 metre rule. I think some people are of the opinion it's a load of over-the-top nonsense (my ageing brother for eg!), and just think fuck everyone else, I'm just getting my shopping as i normally would. Lovely. Angry
