He seemed like a nice bloke too. My friends husband once berated him for complaining about the building work that was being done on a hotel he was staying at in London (friends hubby being the builing contractor). Pavarotti had the work stopped because he was trying to sleep, when friends DH got back the next day he had an extremely verbal go at some bloke on a balcony who he referred to as "a big fat bloke who had the f*ing cheek to stick his nose in and give the workmen orders". Once he realised who he'd been insulting, he sent his apologies and was invited to meet Pavarotti who found the whole incident amusing.

A sad loss to music. Listening to Pavarotti sing Nessun Dorma with Jose Carreras and Placido Domingo at the 1990 World Cup introduced me to opera. My thoughts are with his daughter.

I am in tears over the loss of Pavarotti which is unusual for me. I'm not given to such outbursts but...
Have adored his voice and him for all my life.
I named our dd after the region where he was born and where he made his operatic debut.
He made the world a better sounding place.

oh how sad

Mhamai · 06/09/2007 11:09

Oh God that's so my late mum got me into his music and I brought my dad to see him in concert three years ago. He voice literally made the hairs on my neck stand. A true legend.

AufishFeQueen · 06/09/2007 13:34

I have just watched the BBC news tribute to him and I ended up crying. I heard this morning that his DD was jumping on his bed trying to wake him up and wanting him to come and play with her. So heartbreaking

RIP You wonderful big man with a wonderful voice. I will always remember you.

Agree with all the nice things that are being said and, despite criticism from music snobs, he did a great job making opera more accessible for people.

(Having said that, you lot are usually a leeeeeetle bit harsher on men who leave their wives for younger women...)

I was so sad when I heard that he had dies. I have had the privalge of seeing him perform many times and he was an amazing talent. The world has lost something very special.

TheQueenOfQuotes · 06/09/2007 13:55

very - I said to DH last night when it was on the news that he was "seriously ill" that it would probably be in the next few days or so.

speedymama · 06/09/2007 16:23

It was because of Pavarotti that I developed a taste for classical music. I bought the "Three Tenors" CD and have slowly added to my collection.

The trouble with music snobs is that they think that classical music should be exclusive and can only be appreciated by a certain class of people.

The world is a poorer place without him.

May he RIP.
