i hate the word "friendly" fire and it usually means a bunch of stupid gung ho Americans ready to kill anything

Sadly, this is nothing new when it comes to war, it's just that now it's reported in civilian press. Doesn't mean it's justified, but it is far from unheard of in war. In the past, even generals have been killed by it. And there are probably thousands more, particularly in WWII, who were killed by it in all out battles but no one ever knew.

I know one of my great-uncles was a POW in WWII at some camp in Poland, and they were terrified of being 'liberated' by Russians, because as he put it, 'they just fragged everything.'

fuck shouldnt have mentioned the gung ho americans

expatinscotland · 27/08/2007 09:26

Why not? What difference does that make? 'Friendly fire' isn't exclusive to any particular war, it's been a part of all warfare since men decided to start doing this to each other. It wasn't until recently, however, that warfare began to be reported in the civilian press, but if you think this is the first time stuff like this occurs, think again. Hence the saying 'war is hell'.

i wasnt really thinking about this war i was more thinking about the end of WW2

Huh?

There were many deaths from friendly fire throughout WWII. My granddad was at Normandy.

Bullets and shells were just flying and people dropping all over. No one had any idea if they were friend or foe. There was the mission and one's orders and that was how it was.

And, like my great-uncle said, their camp was liberated by the Russians and it was just heavy mortar fire all around, friend or foe, the objective was to liberate the camp.

He and his two British comrades didn't stop to think, 'Is this Allied or Nazi fire', they just ran like fuck.
