Parents "not allowed" to call son Superman

Heard this on the news on Radio 2 this morning - so not got a link as yet.

Think it is in Sweden. Parents wanted to call their DS "Superman" as he had been born with one hand above his head - as Superman flies I guess.

They haven't been allowed as officials feel that the child faces ridicule as he gets older.

!

Angeliz · 29/09/2004 09:03

Does that mean i can't call my new baby Rocky or BatWoman??

Hulababy · 29/09/2004 11:01

ROFL ! To be fair, the registrar has a point

What kind of a loon do you have to be to name your child Superman, anyhoo ?!

Kayleigh · 29/09/2004 11:06

Heard that too Hula. Had me chuckling to myself.
Maybe they would be allowed to use it as a middle name !

CountessDracula · 29/09/2004 11:07

Fair enough. I do think that the child would suffer as a result and may even grow up wearing his underpants outside his trousers.

Angeliz · 29/09/2004 11:07

It will turn into one of those grey areas though won't it?
I mean where do they draw the line ?

JoolsToo · 29/09/2004 11:10

NDP the same sort that would call their child 'Romeo' or 'Apple'!

Personally I think Batwoman is a lovely name for a girl

albert · 29/09/2004 11:11

DS was born in Denmark and there they had a list of the names you could choose - and no ecxeptions. It was very long but it did mean that there was no way you could call your kids silly names. I guess it's the same in Sweden. TBH I think it's up to the parents what they call their kids not the authorities but the Danes thought I was mad when I questioned it!!

bran · 29/09/2004 12:54

Lots of countries have rules like that - Germany is like albert's experience of Denmark in that there are approved lists, people that we knew in Berlin had some trouble finding a name that they liked. I have a feeling that they don't care so much if the child isn't a German citizen.

I'm pretty sure that France has a rule about names not being potentially embarassing for the child.

I would be a bit pissed off if I couldn't choose my child's name, but on the other hand if we had that rule here then there would be fewer Kylies and Chardonnays .

Oh dear, my son THINKS he's superman at the moment, does that mean we can't visit sweden?

Moomin · 29/09/2004 20:52

is it france where they have to choose a saints name and no others are allowed? forgive me if it's not but certainly one of the european countries not far from home have this as a rule. i must say, its all getting a bit out of hand when kids are called superman. poor little bugger.

my friend's son's hand was positioned above his head and it tore her labia as he was born. should she have called him fanny-ripper?

mumtochloe · 30/09/2004 09:44

When his mum told me his name I thought it was french 'elbee'. But no - it stands for Little Boy and it's what he'd been called in the womb....hope she's not a mumsnetter.....

sweetkitty · 01/10/2004 11:38

I'm away to check on little Perineum Ripper as we speak!

marthamoo · 01/10/2004 11:44

Ds1 came out one arm above his head, Superman stylee - not for one second did it occur to me to use that for inspiration for a name. Mad people!

katzguk · 01/10/2004 11:56

my DD came out like superman too!!! should have called her 23 (the number of stitches i got).

just think how many baby supermans there could potentially be!!!

marthamoo · 01/10/2004 12:19

I had 27 stitches...beat you, beat you!

SecondhandRose · 01/10/2004 12:22

I know a boy called Rocky. Honest. He's about 13.

fisil · 01/10/2004 12:25

Maybe alright when he's older, but I don't fancy he whole nappy on the outside concept.

Must see how Blue Slimey Rat Boy is getting on.
