This is shocking. I can see protection is necessary to avoid political detentions but this is appaling.

I too was shocked to read this story. It's disgusting that she's been able to flee back to the US. I hope she's brought to justice.

BubblesBuddy · 07/10/2019 23:32

She won’t come back unless the US Government agree. That’s not a given.

JaneJeffer · 07/10/2019 23:36

It so awful for that family.

Blueuggboots · 07/10/2019 23:54

I am furious about this! Diplomatic immunity is NOT meant to be used in the way, I'm sure! I am no expert!

PickedByYou · 08/10/2019 00:10

It's a shocking case. That woman should be so ashamed of herself.

Unfortunately the abuse of diplomatic immunity is common. There have been some shocking cases on the past. Money laundering, guns, drugs etc etc.

SouthWestmom · 08/10/2019 12:02

I heard an interview with the mother this morning. They are planning to go to America if nothing changes to do interviews.

In 1997, the U.S. asked that Georgian diplomat Gueorgui Makharadze have his immunity waived by his government after he caused a five-car pile-up in Washington DC, resulting in the death of a teenage girl. Their request was granted.

It will be interesting to see if double standards apply.

managedmis · 08/10/2019 12:14

Is diplomatic immunity what it says on the tin? She's immune because she's a diplomat? It's not like she was performing diplomatic services at the time....

How can this make sense? Confused

MzHz · 08/10/2019 12:17

Apparently she’s married to the diplomat...

SilenceMeansWhatAreTheyUpTo · 08/10/2019 18:05

Turns out the husband isn't actually a diplomat...

MzHz · 09/10/2019 07:35

Oh? Really!?

TequilaPilates · 09/10/2019 07:40

This woman should be ashamed of herself. Utter cowardice to hide behind diplomatic immunity in this way.

SouthWestmom · 09/10/2019 09:29

How did she leave then?

How did she leave then?
They're claiming immunity under some other arrangement according to the news report on the BBC yesterday. Looks as though the whole family were got out of the country on a private flight from the US air base on the advice of the US authorities, despite having given assurances that there were no plans to leave.

MockersthefeMANist · 09/10/2019 15:57

Mr S is a spy who works at the very top secret communications interception facility. His work will be related to listening to calls and peeking at emails and other communications anywhere in Europe.

It was from this base that the USA monitored Angela Merkel's phone.

So it's all rather embarrassing.

SilenceMeansWhatAreTheyUpTo · 09/10/2019 16:35

Hmm - so I suppose that means his cover is somewhat blown then? If they were hoping to hush it up, then it's kind of backfired.

DarkAtTheEndOfUk · 09/10/2019 20:22

This is the reality of modern life in societies that have grown too big for their boots.

We live in an us-and-them society, and the US is worse. Certain high-ranking social groups have immunity from their actions under any circumstances through social connections and social markers. Is anyone seriously surprised?

I am so sorry for the family and pray it isn't my child next.

SouthWestmom · 09/10/2019 22:00

Trump is going to talk to her to see if he can set up a meeting. 'To do some healing'

Honestly.

HeavyChopping · 10/10/2019 06:29

This is just so disgusting. How can the woman live with herself? Why is DI being afforded to spouses? Feel so sorry for Harry's parents and family.

MockersthefeMANist · 10/10/2019 09:12

The line that "It's so hard to drive on the wrong side of the road" is very much the one applied to US military personnel who kill behind the wheel in the UK and come before US courts under the Visiting Forces Act. $1 fines are not unknown for causing death.

UK military in Germany by contrast are subject to German law if any Non-UK military are involved in the incident.

Perch · 10/10/2019 09:17

Diplomatic immunity will never be waived as it sets precedents for other countries. If I were the parents I would go to the US and file a civil claim against her for gazillions of $, I’m sure there will be a hot shot lawyer that will take it on with a share of the payout.

Awful woman.

MockersthefeMANist · 10/10/2019 12:44

There is no diplomatic immunity in this case. The agent had limited immunity but was not an accredited diplomat and nothing extended to his spouse. They were taken out of the country in secret evading all customs and immigration checks.

A precedent has been set and the next time a non-acredited US govt employee is arrested in the UK they will be in a police and/or remand cell for the duration.

ImGoingToBangYourHeadsTogether · 10/10/2019 18:01

I think the 'diplomatic immunity' argument is pretty much academic, or an excuse. The bottom line is that Trump is not going to force any "fellow American" to stand trial in any other country. We've lost the principle of governance through law within our country and internationally. We're back to 'the guy (probably a guy too) with the biggest gun wins'.
